This, our first landing, was at Roberts Island off the Antarctic peninsula. The elephant seal in the foreground made all of us laugh when our expedition leader joked that if we missed the last zodiac back to the ship, we would need to learn to eat seal. At that comment, the seal turned his head and looked directly at our leader with a look of "so you think so, huh?!" Then turned his head back to his lazy, lounging appearance.

When one thinks of the continent of Antarctica, many things come to mind. Imposing icebergs, cooooold cold temperatures, brave explorers, comical penguins, and perhaps even spouting whales. And yes, all of these things correctly represent this beautiful place.
