About 70 years ago, the New Zealand Forest Service did 'trial plantings' of various species in order to obtain information for future plantation forests. Redwoods (both 'coast redwoods' - Sequoia sempervirens, and 'giant redwoods' - Sequoiadendron gigantea) were tried in a couple of places.
