Alaska, Our 49th State

For some reason, I always thought Hawaii was our 49th state, and Alaska the 50th. Our largest state entered the Union on January 3, 1959, when I was in the 7th grade. It was acquired in 1867, mostly known then as "Seward's Folly" after the U.S. Secretary of State who engineered the purchase form Russia.
