Korczak Ziolkowski

Dean Nauman of Rapid City, South Dakota painted this portrait of sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski. Mr. Nauman painted it from a photograph used in the magazine section on the front cover of the Omaha World Herald. It shows the sculptor at work on Crazy Horse Mountain high above the studio. The elevation on top of Crazy Horse is 6,740 feet, just 500 feet lower than Harney Peak, which is the highest peak east of the Rockies and west of the Swiss Alps. Korczak carved the frame for the painting and half of it has been put on the picture. The other half will be put on when the mountain is finished.
