Descending from La Chaira

A long steep drop to the beach
Following Federico

Federico Gargiulo wrote a book, ‘Walking on Fire’… It was a book of adventure and courage, as he, and two others walked for more than a month around the remote and fairly unknown Peninsula Mitre on the far south-eastern tip of Tierra del Fuego. A True Adventurer!
So, following the path into the (almost) unknown of Patagonian naturalist Alexander von Humboldt, eh? That river crossing sounds so cold, the bushwacking, as always, rather tricky, and that descent to the beach pretty difficult with those full packs, but what a great experience! How great for you all and Hector and Orive to have each other for company--what incredible lives those two lead. I've read the Yamana covered their skin with a thick layer of fat and toasted it on by a fire. I guess since they didn't have gore-tex, anything else would have been wet and stayed wet, but like you, I can't imagine it. What a wild-open, perfect break from your "cozy" life on the ship. Well-done!

Tara Cloud, are you still in South America - I haven't seen any blogs for a while? The Yamana did cover their skin with oils and fats - any clothes would have remained wet and gotten moldy - which was actually how many of them perished, when the Europeans made them wear clothes... The hike was amazing - real wild country. Cheers.
