Rangitoto is the youngest of the 50 volcanoes in the Auckland area. Rangitoto island was formed only 600 years ago when the volcano erupted out of the sea. (This is very young in geological terms...for instance the rocks at the Grand Canyon are millions of years old). The volcano is no longer active. Uninhabited Rangitoto island makes a good day trip.
