Let me know if you agree... Beautiful architecture, nice cafes and fancy restaurants, lots of parks, elegant women, the opera and people who love French literature... Almaty is a great city! What a contrast!
After reading of your high mountain, bike adventures, what a surprise to see this blog! The city looks gorgeous, and I loved your sophisticated little seatmate at the opera. Impressive that they know so much of us, but I'd never heard of this wonderful city.

Maybe I liked Almaty so much because I had been on my bike for so long...
it was great to get a in a proper city, and enjoy a taste of home
