We observed several important differences in the pueblo of Pecos (6,700 ft.) from the pueblo of Tsi-p'in-owinge'. Pecos, derived from the Tewa word "payokona," which means "the place where there is water," was a thriving settlement of about 2,000 people, and was occupied for at least 200 years. When my husband, Phil, and I decided to schedule a driving trip to Yosemite for a series of day hikes, I thought we should also arrange a visit and hike with a friend who lives north of Santa Fe. Our Yosemite visit would be mid-September, but our friend wasn't available until the end of October.
