The jugs contained a strange tasting liquid.

I asked the gentleman “que estas” (what is it). He offered me a taste. I had read about maguey juice, unregulated by the government, which contains about 25 percent water. It is considered to be the black sheep of the tequila family.

Lunes, 5 March, we said goodbye to Ed and Michelle and struck off on our own to Zacatecas. Leaving San Miguel, the terrain appeared to be mostly ranch land.
