Citadel

The citadel of Castelo Rodrigo was built about 1209 under Alfonso IX of León. It was probably located on the site of an earlier Moorish fortress. King Dinis of Portugal made improvements in the fortification about 1290. IMG_8157

Castelo Rodrigo is both a mountaintop fortified village and a ruined medieval castle. The mountain upon which it sits is just over the border from Spain, thus the castle has been much contested between the two countries over the centuries.
