Branching out on my own in Italy

We travelled straight down to the Swiss-Italian border through wine country, with the terraced grape fields quite striking. It was a very steep climb up to the St Bernard Pass, with the countryside very reminiscent of the Snowy Mountains in summer. We decided against the 7km tunnel with the toll an exorbitant 25SFr.
