South African Large Telescope, in the high, barren Karoo region north of Cape Town. I booked a visit here 6 months ago and was sure we’d miss out when the flight was cancelled. But we made it in time for the night visit and a close look at cloud nebulae in Orion and some distant star clusters. This is the largest optical telescope in the Southern Hemisphere. You could see a lit candle, on the moon!!
