I see them
We had same problems with people at this arch. Some kids were enjoying a picnic, which looked fun but we did not enjoy a mess of bottles of coke and plastic bags in our photos. It's funny now, but not then.

Hi Josie, I can understand how that would have been frustrating when you were trying to take photos... but the women in our photos ended up providing some much needed scale for that huge arch :)

I just love Roman ruins
I just love Roman ruins. Unfortunately Emma isn't quite as fond of them as I am. I usually get to see one or two on any given trip where there are nice ruins to see. But somewhere there is the limit. /Ake

I really should have listened more in History classes - I had no idea the Roman Empire was so widespread. Makes you wonder if the Empire would have lasted longer if they had concentrated their efforts in a smaller area. But there's also the theory that lead poisoning brought them down, but I'm not sure about that one. Would like to know what your favourite Roman ruin is so far? Or maybe the top five?

Top 5 Roman ruins
Oh that was a difficult one. This is not a seriously compiled list and it is not in any particular order. Just something I throw down. El Jem (Tunisia): Fabulous amfitheatre. Pompeji (Italy): Large and extremely well preserved. Hadrians Wall (England): Even though much of the wall is gone there is still enough to understand how mighty it once was. We hiked along the entire wall. That was part of the experience. Rome: There are so many ruins in and around Rome so picking just one feels strange. But if I am forced to take one only Baths of Caracalla. As the fifth I just throw in a general one: I really enjoy stopping at a random ruin in the middle of nowhere. Often you can walk around by yourself and explore them. There are plenty of those in Turkey. /Ake

Thanks for the list. This could be one of your subject based blogs in the future! I've seen many of the ruins in Rome over the years but I don't think I've seen the Baths of Caracalla - will have to look it up. And I agree about the random small Roman ruins in places like Turkey :)
