Here I go!
The plane I would fly in for 18 hours, from Auckland to Melbourne, then to Dubai. Hello!
I thought I would start off this blog with a post about my travel from Auckland to Copenhagen, Denmark.
It started off with a short 4 hour flight to Melbourne, where I got off the plane and reboarded the same plane 2 hours later.
Then to Dubai, which took 14 hours. Got about 3 hours of sleep, which wasn't great considering that I had just 5 hours the night before.
During my 3 hour stop in Dubai airport, I hung out with a guy who was waiting for the same flight, who I will call Mr T. Mr T and his family were returning home to Sweden after a short holiday in Saudi Arabia. Me and Mr T did some walking and talking; he was super friendly and it was great to have someone to spend that time with.
The last flight was to Copenhagen, taking 6 hrs, 40 minutes. There was a moment when the plane was landing in Copenhagen airport that I could see the land and buildings through the window from my aisle seat, and then it hit me: This is real. I am in Denmark. Holy cow.
After the flight
Me and Mr T
Me and Mr T about to board the plane from Dubai to Copenhagen. I met with Mr T again and he helped me find where to get a metro/train/bus card from, then we said goodbye. I may visit him in Sweden while I am on this exchange trip.
From taking off in Auckland to touching down in Copenhagen, the travelling took about 30 hours, with over 24 hours of flying.
My flight was with Emirates, and the whole flight was good (food, entertainment, service), especially considering it was just economy class. Every seat had a small screen in front to watch movies, play games, see the flight progress, etc. I watched these movies:
• Planes - Seemed appropriate, and I had been wanting to see it
• What we do in the shadows - This had some strange scenes that made me wonder what the old Iranian woman sitting on my left thought of me
• Dumb and dumber too - Meh. This also had some strange scenes. Stop glancing at my screen, woman!
• Insurgent - Didn't quite finish the movie on the flight to Dubai, so I continued it on my next flight
• Shaun the sheep movie - An interesting fact about this movie is that no one knows exactly how many sheep there are in it. Everyone who tried counting them failed for some reason :P
• Asterix: the mansions of the gods - Better than I expected, and it was interesting hearing voices for characters I had only seen in comic books
The Iranian woman next to me was quite sweet but she only spoke Persian and they didn't have any movies in that language so she just ended up watching the old Alice in Wonderland movie without sound. She took all the plastic items that they hand out with the food, like little plates, bowls and cups, and put them in a big bag. She may have taken some metal cutlery also...
On the flight to Dubai I sat next to a man who stared at my screen while he was eating. I suppose that this is the modern day equivalent of reading the paper over someone's shoulder. Although in this analogy he has the exact same paper, but still chose to read mine. The nerve! Haha, I wasn't so annoyed but I did find it odd.
I could also plug in my usb drive to listen to podcasts I had downloaded before leaving. This helped keep me entertained when I was sick of watching movies and also between the many half hour naps that my sleep consisted of.
After all that flying and waiting, I took the metro, train and then bus to DTU, the university where I am working and have accommodation. The time here is 10 hours behind Auckland, and I had had very little sleep since leaving, but I managed to stay awake until 11pm. Since then I have had many 9 hour sleeps.
Sorry about the page layout/format, I can't edit it to look how I want and the default locations of images cannot be changed.
I may end up writing these for each week, but this took a while to write, so the next posts shouldn't be so long. The adventure has just begun!
