HEADING FOR PALMER STATION Woke up early to spotty sunshine and ICE BERGS & BERGY BITS floating by my window. Coffee and juice worked their magic, my second cup made with hot chocolate mix, a great way to start the day. We are heading to Lamaire Channel where the scenery is awesome and the animals plentiful. Downed my long undoes, grabbed Gerald’s camera my mittens and funky long eared hat and prepared to head out on deck. While passing the dining room the call of smoked salmon lured me. Enjoyed a nice breakfast with happy people (the only kind I allow to sit with me) and we saw penguins doing their dolphin dance, leaping out of the water and diving back in, probably Adelies but I can’t be sure. On deck it was chilly but not ... read more

ANTARCTICA - Friday the 13th. Slept in today. The ship was nicely rocking and we had a smooth crossing of the infamous Drake Passage. It was much more pleasant than if had adhered to our previous course. The wind is howling a bit and the sky is still overcast but I’m hopeful that the skies will clear when we get closer to the continent. My tablemate Gerald has offered me the use of his spare camera for the rest of the trip or until I can get mine up and running. What a generous offer. There is a wandering albatross riding the currents at the stern. These remarkable birds’ wingspan can be 12’ and once they fledge they are at sea for up to 6 years. They need a cliff or high platform in order to ... read more

DRAKE PASSAGE: Had a very early evening last night. Wasn’t interested in the show or the movie, the casino was closed due to Chilean law and I didn’t want to sit in a bar and drink so I nested in my room watching my course on Ancient Civilizations. When I began to nod off I turned out the lights and was awake again at 2:00 am. Got up, had a glass of wine and read until sleepy and still was awake before my call and ready for the day. We were still in the Magellan Straits and the sea was calm. The day was overcast so the greens and whites on the snow-capped peaks were not as brilliant as they might have been. The minute we entered the Drake Passage everything changed. The seas are around ... read more

We're in the Port of Montevideo looking up at the enormous container ship towering over us. Well I expect its normal size for a container ship but it seems enormous. It dwarfs our ship, the Plancius, our home for the next 18 days. Its fascinating watching it being simultaneously loaded and off-loaded, a continuous flow of lorries driving past, pausing for a few seconds while a container is placed on them then driving off – its all incredibly efficient. There are giant cranes everywhere and its only when you leave port and compare them to the city's skyline that you realise just how big they are – far bigger then any of the skyscrapers. From Montevideo its 1,437 nautical miles to South Georgia. That's 4 to 5 days straight across the Atlantic Ocean – did I ... read more

We are back out in the open ocean again crossing the Scotia Sea from South Georgia to Paulet Island, Antaractica - hopefully we'll be there in 2 days but that depends on pack ice conditions in the Weddell Sea. Luckily the post-storm swells are calming down and soon we have mirror smooth seas. The ship is surrounded by the now familiar albatrosses and petrels and we have a few new comers including southern fulmars, blue petrels and pure white snow petrels. Some of the new species are so exciting that we get a 06:30 wake up call for Kerguelen petrels one day followed by a 04:30 wake up call for Antarctic petrels the next day - remember we are on a ship full of bird watchers! On most trips 2 or 3 Antarctic petrels would be ... read more
