I was allowed, and indeed encouraged, to board early, and the attendant fussed over my oxygen connection. I noticed that he was often consulting the manual; I may have been his first supplemental-oxygen passenger. I was assured that if the POC proved insufficient for my needs Air New Zealand would supply pure medical oxygen if I told the crew I was in distress. For the first time ever, I had a really comfortable flight. I definitely needed two seats; I checked and there is no way I could have fitted into one. I don't think I could have if I were a hundred pounds lighter, either. Maybe if I were still 180 lbs, I might have squeezed in. But two seats were far more than enough room, as I only overlapped my seat by a ... read more

20th October - 5am. A loud crash woke Chris and Roisin up. The ship had just rode a wave that was at least 20 feet and being right at the bow, they had felt the full force of the pitching of the ship as it crashed nose first in to the ocean. The ship had been rocking and rolling as well as pitching all night but that was by far the most volatile movement. The wind was howling outside cabin number C105 and the captain's log showed the wind strength as 45 knots or force 8 – strong gale. At 8:15am Chris looked out of the balcony window to be met by grey skies, driving rain and waves he had only experienced through the magic of Hollywood. Unfortunately most of those films ended with the ship ... read more

We arrived at Auckland Airport a full 3 hours before the flight in order to give ourselves the best opportunity to get our ‘standby’ upgrade to ‘Premium’ economy. It’s important to shuffle up to the check-in desk with a swagger that suggests that upgrading me is not only a good idea, but the first step in a long line of excellent decisions. Body language is key here, so I employed the ‘Don’t look at the check-in woman in the eyes but stare at your feet instead’ technique whilst mumbling ‘ Um, did we get our upgrade?’ and laughing nervously and trying to look un-terrorist like. Unfortunately my efforts were wasted and we were told that we’d have to check at the gate, so I initiated the ‘Of course we check in at the gate’ nod and ... read more

So, as the ship sailed away from Bora Bora, the next stop is Pago Pago in American Samoa, 1114-odd miles away and 2 days sailing - time for Roisin and Chris to get back in to their 'routine'. The routine was by now having a familiar look about it. Breakfast about 9am then it was down to Club Fusion for the morning trivia. Day 14 of the cruise, once again, brought success to Chris and Roisin who where now known as ‘the team without portfolio'. The reason being is that the useless knowledge Chris and Roisin have demonstrated when they have been quizzing alone has made others want them to strengthen their team as teams are allowed to have 6 players. On the morning of 6th October, they were quizzing with the Delta Delays. This team ... read more

Between Wednesday 29th September – 2nd October 2010, the Sapphire Princess was at sea for its 2nd stint of 4 uninterrupted days. On 30th September as the door to cabin C105 was opened in the morning, 3 balloons greeted Chris taped to the bulkhead immediately outside. "Happy birthday Meester Chris", said Teody, the one armed Philippino cabin steward as he passed. “Have we somehow entered a Pacific version of the Bermuda Triangle, or something?” Chris said, having had his birthday some 4 weeks earlier. Roisin, who at this time was doubled up with laughter, told Chris that the registration card asked if any birthday or special event was occurring during the voyage. This request did not stipulate a date required so the crew of the Sapphire Princess must have decided on one for Chris!! Just when ... read more

Yes indeedy! Chris and Roisin's last day at sea before hitting their first port of call – Honolulu on Oahu Island was greeted at 7am by the brightest rainbow. You could actually see where the rainbow ended. Not on the horizon as one would expect but actually in the middle of the Ocean. Roisin thought for a second that she could see a little green person bobbing in the sea holding on to a shiny cauldron muttering 'keep yer teevin' hands of me gold, begorrah!! 4 days in to the cruise and Chris and Roisin have not really taken part in any activities preferring instead to ‘sun it up' on deck and ‘pamper it up' in the thermal spa suite. So today to break the mould they decided to work out those brain cells (note the ... read more

This is Chris and Roisin's 3rd day at sea without sight of land, any other ship or plane. The sun is beating down relentlessly. Provisions ran out some time ago. Despite there being an ocean full of the stuff, water is no longer available. (although they're still serving cocktails in the Explorers bar, deck 7!!) Teody, their cabin steward has offered himself to be eaten. He says it would be a great honour and privilege to be consumed by such nice people. On the plus side, Roisin learned how to decorate an egg!!!! There is a wide diversity of people on board from all walks of life. Chris and Roisin have yet to find another couple that are still gainfully employed. There are those who are seasoned travellers and have amassed over 150 cruise days with ... read more

The 2nd full day at sea, Honolulu bound. At 11am the bridge made an announcement that Whales could be seen off the starboard bow. "Bloody hell!" Chris exclaimed, 'we haven't come very far. Where are we now? Just passing around the Great Orme??!' In reality (and Chris actually knew this but couldn't resist the chance) there were 2 young hump back whales blowing less that 50 yards from the hull of the ship. Chris and Roisin just so happened to be at the right place at the right time (but minus a camera so you'll just have to take their word for it!!) It's a pity there is no such species of whale called a klingon otherwise Chris would have paid to hear the navigation officer say, yes, you've guessed it, “Captain, Klingons off the starboard ... read more

Chris and Roisin's first wake up at sea was at 8am when a knock came at their door. It was the cabin steward with breakfast. Nothing too strenuous just the usual danish, cereal, yoghurt, fruit (and fruit juice), tea and/or coffee. This was not going to be the rule but as this service was included they thought they'd give it a try. They were adamant to give the gym a whirl. At least if this is the only day they use the equipment it will go down on record as having 'given it a go'!! The gym is amazing! State of the art. AND FREE!! There are at least a dozen hi-tech treadmills a number of cross-trainers, bikes (sit up and beg ones as well as the ‘easy rider' type!) and weights to tone bits of ... read more

Today is the day Chris and Roisin board the slow boat to Australia. The first port of call will be Honolulu on Oahu. The journey will take 4 days and is approximately 2108 nautical miles (don't ask the difference, we just know it's a bloody long way!!) During Chris & Rosin's time in San Fran, they had found the cruise terminal but it was at Pier 35 and not pier 27 as mentioned in the travel docs. Roisin had the nouse to consult Trip Advisor. Someone had posted that the reason for the switch was that there were 4 cruise ships in port today, the Norwegian Jewel, the Celebrity Millennium, one other and the most important one of all – the Sapphire Princess. The evidence was that there seemed to be more tour coaches in the ... read more
