Von ihm sprangen mutige ... read more

At Sea: Throughout today we continued on a South – Westerly heading through the South Pacific Ocean towards Auckland. Around midnight this evening we will cross the International Date Line. The I.D.L. is a line running north and south along the 180thmeridian of longitude, but with some adjustments to avoid dividing certain island groups that are bisected by it, namely the Aleutian Islands off Alaska, and more locally to our position the Fiji, Tonga, and Kermadoc groups as well as New Zealand. The International Date Line is the geographical point at which the zone times GMT +12 hours and -12 hours meet bringing about a 24 hour time change. It is the case that if one were to set out from Greenwich in England which lies at 0 degrees longitude and travel eastward, the time zone ... read more

There is no question that people have strong political convictions. Even on holiday. And when there is a presidential election happening, those feelings get escalated. Not a good combination, especially when you are at sea for a five day run and alcohol is abundant. Things are getting very heated. I have tried to steer clear of those conversations but somehow I end up getting sucked in. I feel there is nothing more I can do except wait for the results. I have cast my vote and mailed it in, as my shipmates have. Even if you change your mind, your vote is cast, so arguing is a moot point. It is my impression that Americans are in the minority on this ship. The English, Kiwis and Aussies are very interested in our election and ask many ... read more

Polliwog to Shellback One of the reason we decided to choose this cruise itinerary is because we will become "Shellbacks". When I was becoming certified as a cruise agent through CLIA I learned about it and said that, that was for me. So some of you maybe asking, "what is a Shellback"? A Shellback is a person that sails over the equator. There is a ceremony, "The Court of Neptune". It is held by every ship on the high seas whenever they cross the equator. One of the attributes I love most is, it does not matter where you rank, if you are but a Pollywog you must participate. From meek young ensign to admiral of the fleet. I have read about the different types of ceremonies. Some of the hard core naval ones consisted of ... read more

Today the ship the highlights are, a "Beyond the Podium" speaker will talk about Trans-Atlantic Contact before Columbus. There is also a galley tour and a "Freedance" that will benefit The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. For that you pay $15.00 and receive a tee shirt and $10 goes to the foundation. Here we are in the middle of the Pacific Ocean steaming, okay diesel ing, our way to Pago Pago Samoa. It is a clear and beautiful day out. Actually the weather could not be better. Warm and clear with a beautiful breeze and a few puffy white clouds floating in front of the sun from time to time to just give you a comfortable respite from the sun. I can walk around the ship and look out and see nothing. Literally nothing, but ocean. It ... read more

Hi everyone, 27th March : We got on board the Volendam at 3pm and promptly met the bar staff. We had dinner together late then Maureen and I went back to the Crows Nest Bar to watch as we sailed from the beautiful Waitemata Harbour at midnight. Leone and Bill headed to bed. Maureen and I were asked to head to bed as we were last in the bar at 1.45am and they were about to close up for the night. (They make a mean Vodka Martini) 28th March : Slow start to yesterday but very enjoyable as we cruised around the Coromandel, Bay of Plenty,Mercury Bay and White Island which of course was putting on a show for us. I woke up feeling a little seasick this morning so took a seasick tablet and felt fine the rest of the day. I read todays Pacific Daily (newsletter delivered to your room, with all the days activities) last night I put my watch back 1 hour but I was supposed to do that tonight so when we went to check out Deck Boules it had already finished, luckily we realised at the point what I had done so we didn’t miss anything else. Opps! We went to a juggling lesson, it was so much fun and we both ended up being able to juggle, a bit. Of course we also did a bit of relaxing out the back at the Oasis deck (we did that every day) before heading to ballroom dancing lessons where we learnt ... read more
