It was nice to sleep in this morning. Last night our cabin steward brought us two milk chocolate candies, leaving them with today’s “Where & When” document today’s basic information, letting us know that it will be casual dining this evening and that the high temperature today will be 49˚ Fahrenheit as well as a list of activities for the day. This schedule has not always jived with the online “Happening on Board” which is supposed to mirror the published list of events delivered to our rooms. This has not always been the case. Since we were in Dublin, they’ve been alternating two milk chocolates one evening and two dark chocolate the next; which, has made Sharon much happier. I think that she was convinced that I’d made a special arrangement with Haysim and Intan (our ... read more

People have all sorts of reasons for going on cruises, especially longer cruises. Sharon and I wanted to know whether we were suited for spending multiple weeks at sea, possibly considering a longer cruise than this, and now we’re committed. We haven’t even finished this one yet and we’ve already got three cruises planned through 2020. And that last one’s a doozy… 128 days! Sharon was off to the Hudson Room for Sunday Mass, wondering why in the world they didn’t choose the larger Wajang Theatre. The house was packed to capacity. Sharon had warned me that it might run a bit longer than usual, and it’s probably good that it did because it was already 8:20 when I took a break from the blog to check the time. Okay, I had to rush. Father Roman ... read more

Daylight comes a bit later in the English Channel than it did when we cruised the seas around Greenland, Iceland and Norway. Being able to turn the clock back an hour may have also helped. Sharon still had to rise to make it to mass; I took a more lethargic pace. I still needed to get up to meet up with her for breakfast. I worked some on the blog, checked the “When & Where” for today’s activities. We’ll be checking out the new speaker at the 11AM lecture dealing with the Vikings and Ireland. She replaced Stuart Sutherland in Rotterdam and has her work cut out for her. Lunch and Trivia follow, then Bingo at 4PM and then a Gala Dinner. Just another peaceful day at sea. I met Sharon in the Exploration Café where ... read more

Yesterday we got our laundry back. First, we got back the laundry we’d put out two days earlier; which, then had Sharon concerned since she was missing her second pair of jeans. Later we also got the load that we’d put out before that (which included Sharon’s missing jeans); so, it does appear that the extra washing imposed on the laundry for all the linens being cleaned is delaying this service. Our first load was already going to be late, so they saw to it that the second was delivered on time; or, so it seems. I had to use my favorite Trivia T-Shirt as an undershirt in the morning, the one that says, “I don’t need Google, My wife knows everything!” So, it was nice to have regular clothes again. There is no mass this ... read more

The plan had been to get up and to work on the blog for a couple of hours before it would be time for Sharon to scurry off to mass. Well, that was the plan! Instead, I awake to Sharon saying, “Well, it’s about time that you opened your eyes! I’m off to mass.” Okay, so I’m naively thinking that there will be plenty of time to get caught up. I do manage to meet Sharon after mass near the Hudson Room on the Upper Promenade; but, I just barely got there before the “Go in Peace. Mass is Ended.” We’d tried to talk to the Future Cruise Assistant yesterday; but, only managed to get a reservation for today at 9:45AM. So, we only had a bit of time to grab some breakfast in the Lido. ... read more

I had to give Sharon a “Thirty-Minute Warning” as the time for mass approached. I had gotten up early to write the blog. It didn’t look like she was going to budge; but, once she started moving, there was no stopping her. I must have been “in the zone” because I was still typing when she returned, and I still hadn’t showered yet. So now I needed to get moving. The morning was not all that full of idle time. There were important things to do, such as: putting the laundry away, filling a new bag with laundry, eating breakfast, doing Sudoku, attending a lecture… all before having lunch. And you know what the nice thing about this on a cruise ship? Somebody else brings you the finished laundry, somebody else does the laundry, somebody else ... read more

Today is one of our “Catch-Up” Sea Days; but, it seams that we are pretty much on schedule posting blogs for the previous day. We sort of slept in; since, even though it is a Sea Day, Sharon doesn’t need to rush off to mass on this Saturday morning. She’ll be going to the Vigil Mass at 5:00PM and she won’t need to go tomorrow; and, that’s a good thing because tomorrow is a very busy day for us, with an All-Day tour. We’ll be in Reykjavik and we’ll be staying overnight. We barely made it to the Rotterdam Dining Room before they stopped serving breakfast at 9:30AM. Another couple was already seated by the window at our table for four. And evidently, they’d already ordered as well. I ordered Eggs Benedict (again) with hashed browns ... read more

Some people don’t like sea days. It’s a good thing that we do. For one thing, it gives us a chance to catch our breath instead of going on a tour day after day to the point that it becomes a grind. And also, like yesterday, we found ourselves with an unscheduled sea day. We’ve been on cruises where fellow passengers would insist that if they missed a port it was due to some sinister plot by HAL to keep them on board to buy more things in their onboard stores; or, just to ruin their vacations! That doesn’t seem to be the case on Voyage of the Vikings where the norm is to be a 4-star or 5-star mariner and there seems to be an appreciation that the captain’s primary focus is our safety. And ... read more

Sharon went off to mass and I finished up the blog. This had all the markings of one of those lazy days at sea that would let us catch up on everything; but, looks can be deceiving. Nonetheless, it started out that way. We took our breakfast in the dining room. I thought the menu had changed; but, it was just the color and presentation. I got a frittata and muesli, and maybe I went off diet a little with two of the hash brown cakes and two sausages. I really have been good though by forgoing the bread and rolls at meals. This frittata seemed to be more of a fried egg white than I remember them as being, and the bowl of muesli was much bigger than I remember; although, it only had one ... read more
