Southampton en route to Madeira 10th June 2017 Well here we are again, on board the refitted and slightly refurbished Queen Victoria. Our cruise is taking us to an overnight stop in Funchal, Madeira and then onto the Canary Islands visiting La Palma, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote bore heading home via Lisbon. The cruise is themed to take in the Flower Festivals in Madeira and the Canaries. Queen Victoria has had a major refit since we left her on the 5th May. The major alteration is the new stern, where the stepped decks have been straightened. As one Cunard employee said, she's got a bigger 'bum'. Internally, there is a new restaurant, and a reconfiguration of some of the bars, but the extra space up in the Lido pool area is the most significant change. New ... read more

The last day on a cruise is always bittersweet for us. We've enjoyed every cruise we've ever been on, so getting ready to disembark is a little sad. No more cabin stewards to magically clean our cabin every time we leave it; no more 24/7 access to wonderful food of all types; no more daily entertainment from all kinds of talented performers; and no more of the essentially stress free environment that exists on cruises. In other words, it's back to reality! This cruise was no exception: we loved everything about it. The small disappointment of skipping Bermuda was offset by the unexpected pleasure of visiting the Azores. The few rainy days at sea were perfect for just relaxing, and didn't disrupt any of the fun activities going on inside. Even though it was pretty chilly ... read more

To adapt an old and much used adage: No cruise for 6 months then 3 come along together!!' After the bad storms and palaver we experienced on the last cruise 2 weeks ago, some of us (not me!!) said: 'I am never cruising again' and here we are once more about to embark on an 11 night cruise around the Canary Islands. In the words of the great Sean Connery: ‘Never say Never Again!!' In the week between cruises, Roisin has spent most of her time studying the meteorological charts. She has become so proficient in understanding the weather and translating the isobars and air pressure into real weather, I feel I'm married to my very own weather girl!! The bad news is that there is a massive depression in the North Atlantic moving east. It ... read more

Arrived Greenock early morning, decided to stay around Greenock and take in the local sites as it is a 45 minute train ride to Glasgow and the ship really pushes the big tours which we are not interested in. We had a big warm welcome from the Scots at Greenock, the Inverclyde Tourist Group is a volunteer group that meet the ship, we could learn a thing or two from them, they were fantastic, loads of people willing to give as much information as possible and to promote their area, they say its taken them 13 years to convince ships that Greenock is a destination in itself. They have won an MBE for their community service, there are about 50 volunteers - which is huge for a small community. They offered three different free tours, which ... read more

Around 3 am, I was woken up by Ken opening the curtains and then the balcony door. I said what are you doing? He said, "didn't you hear that?" I said "hear what?" He said "the fog horn". I said "no I was sleeping; what can you do about it? Do you think you can help, the captain?" He said he just wanted to make sure everything was ok because he also heard some loud noises above us. He came back to bed. For the next 40 minutes I tried to go back to sleep; the fog horn went off every two minutes and it was loud. I finally got up, turned on the light , took half a sleeping aid and read my book until I got sleepy (the fog horn still sounding). Ken told me ... read more
