So sorry for the delay in this our last blog, but we have been wrapped up in trying to settle in to our new country (South Africa), which required adjusting to the new culture, finding jobs doing other admin and most importantly spend time with our new Golden Retriever puppy Gaucho. AUCKLAND AND THE CUMMINS’S As we taxied up the runway to Auckland International our minds immediately kicked into Spanish preparation mode, this was force of habit when arriving in a new city after a long flight/ bus journey. We were going over the words in our heads to make sure we had all the vocabulary and phrases in place to handle the interactions with immigration officials, customs and the rental car agent. Having just completed a thirteen-hour flight crossing 10 time zones and the International ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Kaikoura February 22nd 2006

Hey Everybody. It may seem to you that all we're doing is sitting in front of a computer adding blog entries but its raining right now so we have an excuse. Plus the computer we were on yesterday wouldn't let us upload photos and we really wanted to get a couple of photos on the site. Yesterday we drove to Kaikoura in our Spaceship. Our spaceship is called Baker. They name each one. They are actually very cool. They have a huge water container and pump and a gas grill and the bed is decently sized. Pictured is Michelle cooking some yummy supper. Kaikoura is a small oceanside town mostly driven by tourism where you can go whale watching, check out the Seal Colony, or do what did this morning; go swimming with Dusky Dolphins! The ... read more

hello all. PICTURES Sorry for the massive delay in posts but there really isn't much internet to speak of when you are in the outback. Well from our last post we have course come to Australia and been here for some time. We landed in Sydney to begin our journey. We walked everywhere is this massive city and saw most of it. The botanical gardens were massive, amazing, and at night the sky was filled with massive bats that made their home there. After a short walk through the gardens we were greated with an impressive view of the Sydney opera house and the harbour bridge (a symbol of the entire country). Even seeing it during an overcast day, was still impressive. But what really amazed us was seeing it at night. The lights reflecting in ... read more

Today I made preparations for the sortie east. The car could more repairs than its worth so I've opted for the basics. Tune-up and two new tires. While waiting for repairs I spruiked in Swanbourne. A guy went into a long rendition about money ruling the world. True I said but we've got to keep our spirits up with hope while we work to adjust to problems. I assured him he'd be pleased when I speak at the first hoist of the new flag at Parliament House. After all they've got to give me ten minutes to address the nation. In the afternoon, while sailing the flag came up. Good discussion. One guy (Russel) was really keen to keep current flag. He had personal experiences that tied him to it. Interestingly, when I brought up the ... read more

Spent the day today travelling to the various sites in and around Katherine which included the old train station and locomotive (took some piccies for you dad), Katherine Hot Springs (an idyllic spot for a spot of natural bathing), Low Level nature reserve (a nice spot for a picnic) followed by Kathrine museum where I read up and watched a video of the 1998 Australia day floods that devasted Katherine when flood waters caused the neary Katherine Gorge water level to rise 20.4m completely devastating the town and causing 3 fatalaties, amazing considering the level of the water and the destruction around town. We're off to Katherine Gorge tomorrow, early start as it will be a 3 hour walk along the gorge system and we want to do it early on before the sun gets too ... read more

Fortunately the latest rips in trousers have not included injuring the body beneath them. My poor Rohans have another rip in the backside from chicken wire on the board walks on Stewart Island (sitting down to try and heave my rucksack back on!). What on earth caused my 'smart' black trousers to rip very embarrasingly I don't know. I thought I was getting smaller not putting on weight....They have been consigned to the textile recycling bin in Dunedin. I hope I didn't walk around too long with them like that. I was giving a lift to a 19 year old Swiss guy that day. He didn't say anything so either he didn't notice or was too embarrassed himself! Anyway, back to putting photos on and catching up. I've walked up the Rob Roy valley today for ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Taupo February 22nd 2006

Interesting statistic: it is safer to jump out of a plane in midair, than it is to finish the flight in a more orthodox fashion. Skydiving is also safer than travelling in a car. These kind of facts are comforting when you are about to hurl yourself out of what appears to be a perfectly good plane. 12 thousand feet up is quite high. 12 thousand feet seems especially high when you are looking down at the scenery below from an open doorway. With a word from the man who is going to save my life in the next few moments, we jump. The feeling is so surreal, to be falling and have nothing beneath you. We freefall for about 45 seconds. I scream my head off, partly with joy and partly with fear. It's a ... read more

Hello everyone!! The Magic Bus took us to Queenstown yesterday...We didn't have that much fun in Franz Josef since it was raining and the clouds were covering the mountains and glaciers...But it's ok, we still got to experience the only bar in town : the Blue Ice bar, where we met 4 crazy quebecers with whom with drank a bot more beer than expected at the beginning of the evening :p The ride from Franz to Queenstown was going up and down and right and left....felt a bit sick towards the end and had a headache...Took us all day to finally get down here...Where it is much colder. I'm actually thinking of buying a tuque for tomorrow day at Milford Sound...People wear winter jackets (ok, it's not THAT cold, but i guess for them here, it ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Fiordland National Park » Te Anau February 22nd 2006

Janet and I survived the Kepler Track and I my first backpacking adventure. We returned to Te Anau today at about one o'clock after an easy 4.5 hour hike through forest. The tramp was excellent, a wonderful experience and a lot of fun. Day one was an uphill hike through forest, which took us about 5 hours to complete. This was our one day of beautiful weather and it was definately nice since the views from our first hut were incredible. Because of weather warnings we decided to get an early start on day two--an alpine hike famous for being trecherous during windy periods. Although we couldn't see much of the view, the hike was still fantastic and a lot of fun. Dispite rain and wind we still had a good day of hiking (5.5 hrs) ... read more
