Finally we had made it to this infamous country, infamous because this was my second visit (Andy) and I had previously declared it to be my favorite country! Praise indeed, and I was really hoping it could live up to it in Briggi’s eyes. Perhaps the most important aspect of New Zealand is that the people are so friendly, and we were reminded of that as we went through customs and the customs man treated us like a long lost friend. Wonderful country, nowhere else could I imagine such a reception at the border controls.

Tahiti után Új-Zéland következett. Azt hiszem a világ legbarátságosabb országa, melyet már az országba érkezéskor megtapasztalhattunk. A kedvesen mosolygó vámos úgy kezelt bennünket, mint régi barátokat.

Our first night we spent in Auckland without seeing any of the town (the inside of an Indian takeaway was much appreciated though) as the following day we were flying down to Christchurch on the south island. And that day just happened to be Christmas day!

A szentestét (egyben első új-zélandi esténket) Aucklandben, egy reptér közeli hotelben töltöttük, mert ahhoz sem volt erőnk, hogy bebuszozzunk a városközpontba és amúgy is másnap repültünk tovább. Szerencsére a jeles dátum ellenére találtunk nyitva egy elfogadható árú indiai éttermet így az ünnepi vacsorára sem volt panasz.

Christchurch is a lovely city, especially if you have good weather! Its got a nice town centre, its all well organized and the park is really great. It does feel very much like a old forgotten English city, which was of course the intention. I wish we had some towns like this in England these days..

Christchurch egy nagyon helyes kisváros a déli-szigeten. Különösen ha süt a nap! Tiszta, barátságos belvárosa, 1800-as évekből származó igazi angolos egyetemi epületegyüttese, hatalmas parkja mintha egy elfeledett angol kisváros mása lenne. Hiába karacsony nem kevés turista lepte el a várost, így 25-én se maradtunk éhen.

Having failed to secure a rent-a-car we took the bus across the country through Arthurs Pass (beautiful hilly countryside) to the town of Hokitika. Actually it is probably better described as a village on the sea than a town, and its famous for gold and Jade. We were here a couple of nights and found it to be a very friendly area, where everyone knew everyone, and they made the tourists welcome.

Fontos tudnivaló, ha a karácsonyi időszakban utaztok Ausztráliába vagy Új-Zélandra jó előre foglaljatok le mindent, mert itt ekkor dupla ünnep van. Nyári szünet+ karácsony/újév, így kb az ország 90%!a(MISSING) pihenő üzemmódban funkcionál, ha funkcionál. Mi persze erre nem készültünk, nem is lett bérelt autónk csak január 2-án. Így maradt a távolsági busz az Arthurs Passon át a sziget túloldalán lévő Hokitika aranyvároskájába. Csöppnyi kis turistaközpont a tengerparton tele jadéval és arannyal.

We hired a car from Hokitika and did a day trip down to Franz Josef Glacier (where we walked to the glacier) and then Fox Glacier where we went Helihiking! This was something I had been dreaming of doing ever since I skipped it the last time I was here.. Basically you take a helicopter ride up to and around the glacier before landing half-way up it, and then spending a couple of hours hiking with crampons over the glacier, and into ice caves! Yes, it IS as much fun as it sounds!

Itt sikerült egy napra autót bérelni és bejárni a Ferenc József és Fox gleccserek vidékét. Sőt, Andy nagy álma is teljesült, helihikingoltunk=helikopterrel felrepültünk a gleccser tetejére, majd ott jégjárót kötöttünk cipőnkre és pár órát elmászkáltunk a fehér és kék jég birodalmában. Jó poén, bár a lábam a végére totál elfagyott.

We then caught the bus down to Queenstown, New Zealand’s capitol for outdoor adventure. In all honesty I think it could be named the world capitol for outdoor adventure, as I doubt there is anywhere else with so many outdoor adrenalin options. We only had the one day so we went ‘river surfing’ which is similar to white water rafting in that you float down a river with strong currents and rapids, just holding onto a boogie board instead of sitting in a raft! It was excellent, and Briggi even managed to surf the waves and duck dive into the jetstream!

Újabb egésznapos buszozással értük el Queenstownt, Új-Zéland kalandközpontját. Kétlem, hogy a világon bárhol található még ennyi adrenalin növelő lehetőség. Mivel csak egy fél szabad napunk volt a „folyó-szörfözést” választottuk. Ez tulajdonképpen egy vadvizi evezés, csak hajó helyett egy deszkán. Kapaszkodsz a deszkádba és próbálsz a sodrásban maradni még a méteres hullámokban is. Jó móka. Sikerült meglovagolnom egy hullámot és elmerülni két hullám által okozott örvényben. Erre szívesen újra beneveznék, ha egy kicsit melegebb lenne a folyó.

One of the activities we really wanted to do was one of New Zealand’s fabled National Park walks. They have a world wide reputation, and its necessary to book these multiple-day treks as you have to sleep in park owned huts on the way. To avoid disappointment we had booked ourselves a place on the Routeburn trek many months before, and now it was a time to go! This trek was a two night - three day affair through a range of woodlands, mountains, valleys and fiord land. We were told its impossible to do the walk without any rain, but amazingly thats exactly what we did! We were so lucky with the weather, as if it turned nasty this walk could be really really challenging.. And the walk itself was incredible. You feel completely remote in the most beautiful of scenery. It is simply the best walk we have ever done. No higher praise can be given!

Már indulás előtt biztos volt, hogy végigjárjuk Új-Zéland egyik híres túra útvonalát. Andy álma a Milford túra volt, de sajnos ezt nem sikerült időben lefoglalni. Mert bizony ezeket a pár napos túrákat előre foglalni kell. Illetve az éjszakai szálláshelyeket, akár sátorról, akár az egy egyszerű kunyhóról legyen szó. Szerencsére ezt nem bénáztuk el, és már augusztusban lefoglaltunk az utolsó 4 helyből kettőt a második legszebb túrára, a Routeburn túrára. És végre eljött a nagy nap. A túra 3 nap, két éjszakát tartott csodálatos fjordok, hegyek között, több fajta erdőben és nyílt terepen. Csodálattal határos módon megúsztuk eső nélkül, ami nagy szerencse volt, mert így utólag beláttuk, nem lett volna leányálom és maximálisan nem voltunk rá felkészülve. De a túra lenyűgöző, csodálatos, álomszép tájakon vezetett, barátságos kirándulók társaságában. Azt hiszem még sosem jártunk ilyen szép helyen.

Having returned from the wilderness we hired a car (as the buses work out to be more expensive) and started our driving tour of New Zealand, with the first stop being Milford Sound.
There are plenty of Fiords in New Zealand, but this one is the most easily accessed with boats taking you out for tours on the fiord. Its a fairy-tail place, where huge mountains suddenly drop-off into the fiord, giving birth to thousands of waterfalls. I had been here before on a blue sky day and it was stunning. This time however we had arrived in a rain storm! Actually 3 out of 4 days it rains here, which is why its fiord-land! And being there in the rain is even more amazing than being there in the sun, as thousands of waterfalls are created when the rain falls and dry up shortly after. It is just so completely amazing!

Már várt ránk az autónk ahogy visszatértünk a vadonból, (a busz ritkán jár, lassabb, tele van és drága.) így nekivágtunk az új-zélandi túránknak. Első állomás a Millford Sound.
Új-Zélandon több fjord is található, melyek közül a Milford közelíthető meg a legkönnyebben. Queenstowntól alig 3 óra autókázás gyönyörű hegyes-völgyes vidéken, ahol még a hó is megmaradt (bár már nyár közepén jártunk). Nem lehetett kihagyni, a nyári hógolyózást. Mire elértük a szállásunkat az eső is eleredt (ahogy az várható volt, hiszen már 3 napja nem esett). Másnap reggel - pár perc után - szakadó esőben elértük a hajókikötőt, ahonnan több hajótársaság is indít 3-4 órás túrákat a fjordba. Szokás szerint az eső eleredése után 30 perccel megindul a vízesések százainak zuhataga. Csak álltunk a zuhogó esőben és ámultunk. És hogy teljes legyen az öröm, még 3 delfin is csatlakozott hozzánk.

We decided we wanted to drive all along the south coast as it has a reputation for being a really beautiful coastline, and it was! We stopped at Curio Bay, a tiny village on a surfing beach with Hector's dolphins and yellow eyed penguins as local residents. We spent the evening watching the penguins coming to shore after a busy day catching fish. What made it even more special is that you don’t have to visit a penguin sanctuary to see the penguins, just visit the local beach! They were only 5 people there when we arrived which made it a really unique experience.

Ezután úgy döntöttünk, hogy végigautózunk a sziget déli partján, ami arról híres, hogy egy gyönyörű partvidék. És ez mennyire igaz! Az estét Curio Bayben, egy szörf strandon Hector's delfinek és sárga szemű pingvinek társaságában töltöttük a fosszilia erdőben (alig 180 millio éves famaradványok). Vacsora után meglestünk néhány sárga szemű pingvint a szomszédos strandon, ahogy partra tipegtek hozva a vacsit az apróságoknak. Különleges élmény, melyen alig öten osztozkodtunk.

The next day we drove along the coast all the way up to Oamaru, stopping at every opportunity for short walks, beach breaks and lighthouse visits. It was a really beautiful coastline with very very few people actually visiting it. Perfect. In the evening in Oamaru we headed off to the local beach to see some more penguins. Unfortunately the little blue penguins were not for us, but we got really close to some yellow-eyed again.

Másnap egészen Oamaruig jutottunk, meg-megállva, minden adódó alkalmat megragadva egy sétára, strand pihenőre, világítótorony látogatásra. Oamaruban megint a parton töltöttük az estét további sárga pingvinek társaságában, akikhez ezúttal nagyon közel kerültünk.

The next day we travelled in-land to Mount Cook, and then onward to Lake Tekapo for the night. Needless to say, both were stunning (as everything is in NZ..)! We did the short walk at Mount Cook that takes you to a view point where you can see the Mt and all the surrounding peaks from a valley in the middle of them all. The lake in front of Mt Mount was equally impressive as its the most amazing vivid green colour. Lake Tekapo was actually the same colour, which is supposed to be due to the suspension of tiny white solids in the water from the surrounding mountains. The Lake area is also famous in NZ for having the clearest sky making it ideal for star gazing. Sadly we were too tired to visit the observatory at night, but checked it out the following morning and found it well worth the visit, if only for the panoramic view.

A következő napon a sziget belseje felé vettük az irányt. Cél a Cook hegy, majd éjszakára a Tekapo-tó. Felesleges mondani, hogy mindkettő különleges (ahogy minden Új-Zélandon). A Cook hegy környékén egy rövid, de annál forróbb séta elvezetett egy kilátóhoz, ahonnan gyönyörű rálátás nyílt a hegyre és a környező havas csúcsokra. Nézelődés közben hallgathattuk az apró, de annál hangosabb lavinák dörgéseit. A Mount Cook legalább annyira lenyűgözött, mint az előtte fekvő gleccsertó élénkzöld színe. A Tekapo-tó színe is ehhez hasonló világító zöld, mely a gleccser tavak sajátossága. A részletekre sajna nem emlékszem, de köze van a gleccser által a vízbe jutó parányi szemcséknek. A tó környékének sajátossága a különösen tiszta égbolt, mely ideális csillagnézésre. Sajna túl fáradtak voltunk komolyabb éjszakai csillag vizsgálódásra, csak a tópartján üldögéltünk, de másnap pótoltuk és végigjártuk a csillagvizsgálót. Megérte, ha másért nem is, a látványért biztosan.

The next stop was at Christchurch again before continuing north to Picton, with access to the ferries to the north island. Before leaving the south we took a boat trip out into the Marlborough Sounds to enjoy the scenery and search for dolphins. We did see a good number but only had a couple of opportunities to swim with them. It was a nice trip, but the water was freezing (even with wetsuits)!

Következő állomás ismét Christchurch, mielőtt folytattuk utunkat Pictonba, ahonnan indul a komphajó az északi-szigetre. Azért mielőtt komphajóra szálltunk belefért egy rövidebb hajótúra Marlborough Soundba, ahol megpróbáltunk úszni a delfinekkel, akik azonban nem nagyon voltak kíváncsiak ránk. És ráadásul a víz is bitang hideg volt a vastag búvárruha ellenére is.

Having taken the ferry across to the north island we had a long drive up to Lake Taupo, where the activity for the following day was skydiving! For Briggi anyway.. I was being boring as I had done it before and wanted to save the cash (really - its true!!). We were lucky and she had the perfect weather for her jump from 15,000 ft - as high as you can go without oxygen assistance. I was expecting a little bit of nervousness from Briggi as she got ready, but no - she took it all in her stride. I thought she did a great job of falling out of the plane, and an equally great job of landing with a smile from ear to ear!

A 2,5 óráskompolás után várt ránk pár száz kilométer vezetés a Taupo-tóig, ahol a másnapi program némi szabadesés. Legalábbis nekem, mert Andy már profi ebben a sportban és sajnáltuk a kemény dollárokat. Nagyon szerencsések voltunk, mert első próbálkozásra tökéletes ugróidő fogadott bennünket, így nekivaghattam a 15 000 lábnak, ami oxigénpalack nélkül még bevállalható. Andyt kiakasztottam, mert az idegességnek a legkisebb jelét sem mutattam és tényleg nem is izgultam túlságosan. Miért is? Egy walesivel ugrottam! A legrosszabb a kiugrás pillanata. Nem a tied, a többieké. És mi voltunk az utolsók! Milyen volt? Visszamennék. Akár most is. Ezzel azt hiszem mindent elmondtam.

Next stop was Rotorua, the cultural capitol for the Maori’s and a highly volcanic area with bubbling mud pools all around. Having spent the day around the mud pools we headed off on a cultural evening where we learnt all about the Maori, and most importantly ate like pigs on the fantastic Maori ‘Hangi’ food. The highlight of the evening was the singing / dancing session with the all famous ‘Haka’ dance. The whole evening was actually very well organized and was far from the tacky tourist dinner out we were expecting.

Következő állomás Rotorua, a maorik kultúrális központja, egy erősen vulkanikus terület tele fortyogó sármedencével. Miután körbesétáltuk a színes, szagos, bugyborékolós területet egy maori estet vettünk célba, ahol tanultunk egy csomó jó és érdekes dolgot a maorikról és teletömtük magunkat a maori „hangi” vacsival. Az est fénypontja a táncos/zenés előadás a „haka”.

On route to Auckland we passed though the Waitomo Caves, and went ‘black water rafting’ inside them to see the glowworms. Black water rafting is getting dressed up in as thick a wetsuit as you can find, and navigating your way through the underground rivers in an inner-tube! And why not - its great fun, and the glowworms put on a good show.

Az Auckland felé vezető úton megálltunk a Waitomo Barlangoknál és beneveztünk egy „fekete vízi evezésre”, hogy megnézhessük a híres világítóférgeket. A fekete vízi rafting lényege, hogy beöltözz egy jó vastag búvárruhába és átkavarj egy gumibelsőn/ben ülve - esetleg cipelve - egy földalatti patakrendszeren. Jó móka, és a férgek külön élményt nyújtanak.

Having made it back to our starting point in Auckland we finally took the tour of the city before catching our flight out of New Zealand.

Miután visszaértünk a kiindulópontra, Aucklandbe, végül csak sikerült bejárnunk a várost mielőtt búcsút mondtunk Új-zélandnak.

New Zealand is such a magical country, and there is so much to see and do. Its another highlight of our trip, and remains my favorite country (at least when its not raining!).

Új-Zéland egy varázslatos ország tele csodálatos látnivalókkal, amennyiben a természeti szépségek közel állnak a szívedhez. Egy újabb csúcspontja utunknak és valószínűleg a kedvenc országom (már amikor nem esik).
