The boys were going to go fishing this morning, but it was too windy so … another lazy day was had by all. We ventured out briefly to the collection of shops on McShane Road near the highway. There was a lovely craft shop with loads of gorgeous wool and knitting patterns, but I managed to resist buying anything. I already have a knitting project to finish (two actually!) AND yarn that I purchased during the last lockdown that I haven’t even started on yet … There are some lovely gourmet food shops at this complex so Robin and Sandra stocked up on a few of their faves. Before returning home we called in at the Eyebright Country Store. A year round gift emporium it specializes in all things Christmassy at this time of the year. ... read more

A very lazy day today. After a sleep in and a late breakfast the four of us drove over to Cable Bay for lunch. Its original Māori name was Rotokura before the Europeans gave it the inauspicious name of Schroders Mistake after he stranded his cutter on the sandbar in 1843! The name Cable Bay arose when it became the site where New Zealand’s first overseas cable link came ashore. In February 1876 the international telegraph cable that came ashore at Cable Bay established a connection with the worldwide telegraph network via Sydney. From the cable station, messages were sent to Nelson via telegraph wire. This new service meant that communications between New Zealand and Europe took only four days instead of up to six months for letters. We drove home via Nelson Back Beach and ... read more

This morning we were booked on the 10.00am Whale Watch Kaikoura Tour which was a very civilized time. Having stayed in Kaikoura overnight we didn’t have to be up early or be stressed about traffic and road conditions that might affect us arriving on time. After a leisurely breakfast we packed up the car and made our way over to the Whale Watch depot about 9.45am. It turns out the sailing time is a little bit fluid with 10.00am merely the time that they start checking you in. The actual sailing time was dependent on when the 7.15am sailing returned to port and that depended on where and when the whale activity was earlier this morning! Not to worry, it all happened eventually. Bernie splurged when he booked and paid the extra for us to sail ... read more

So lovely to sleep properly in a bed! After very little sleep in the last 24 hours Bernie slept like the dead and I slept OK. I was awake about 3.30am, which is pretty normal for me, but then went straight back to sleep until about 6.40am. This morning we made ourselves a light breakfast in our room with the fruit, cereal and yoghurt we purchased at the supermarket yesterday afternoon. After said breakfast we re-packed the car and set the SatNav for Hanmer Springs. We were on the road just after 8.00am which was a little earlier than we needed to be, but it’s always better to be ahead of schedule than behind. Our trip up to Hanmer Springs was uneventful apart from some roadworks and a shower of rain. It was just after 10.00am ... read more

So, it was in the early hours of Monday morning when we finally found our way to our seats in the exit row. Wonderful, lots of leg room for us, but we had to try to focus on the instructions being given to us by the flight attendant when we were feeling very sleepy. Now we were being told that we were being delayed because the ground staff had to transfer food from another plane? The captain was actually a bit arrogant blaming our delay on the ground staff processing the transit passengers and then for a problem with the catering?? Whatever! The last two transit passengers clambered aboard and we pushed back from the aero bridge about an hour later than scheduled. After an uneventful flight across the ditch we touched down in Christchurch still ... read more

We went on our last overseas holiday after one of our longest ever breaks from overseas travel. We have departed on our second overseas trip this year after one of the shortest gaps ever between our overseas holidays. After being at home for just 24 days, late this evening we boarded flight JQ 173 bound for New Zealand. Well, actually, we were due to board our plane late this evening, but … Kerry dropped us off at Tullamarine about 9.00pm and we breezed through Jetstar’s self check-in. It is very quiet at Tullamarine late in the day! Screening and immigration was deserted so we made our way through in record time … even though I was selected for the full body scan and Bernie’s bag was taken aside for extra scrutiny after it passed through the ... read more

Back to Queenstown for our final day in New Zealand. I can’t believe how fast this time has passed by and how much we have seen and done. But the vacay isn’t over yet! There’s still Fiji to come. On arrival back in Queenstown, the bus dropped us at the Harbour front to go find our own lunch. Jane, Anne & I sat on a bench and ate cheese, crackers and salami and then wandered around the pedestrian shopping mall until it was time for us to check into the hotel (same one we stayed at a couple of days ago but different rooms this time). Going out for a short walk - 6 kms later we struggled back up the “Torture Hill” from the downtown. But what a beautiful walk we had around the headland ... read more

What an adventure we had this morning! We all piled into a jet boat and went white water rafting up and down the river, through the rapids and doing 360 spins. Anne & I were screaming & squealing with laughter. A couple of times we screamed because we came within a foot of cliffs of the river canyon and thought we were going to crash. But the driver was experienced and she knew what she was doing. Then it was time for lunch at The Stoaker Room. We were in an outside tent at a long banquet style table with birds flying around inside looking for handouts. The food is slow cooked/smoked in oak barrels and then served on long curved barrel staves. First we had fresh baked bread with olive oil and roasted red pepper ... read more

We woke up to a lovely morning in Christchurch, had a chilled breakfast in the motel and then headed towards the town centre. We took the scenic route through Hagley Park, the biggest park in Christchurch with the Avon river running through it. At the far end we came out by the old buildings of Christchurch College. Luckily the amazing Tram system runs right past the college, we bought our day passes and hopped on. We stayed on the tram into town, past the Cathedral and got off by Quake City, a museum to the Earthquakes of 2010 and 2011. Seeing the cathedral was a true reminder of how devastating the Quake of February 2011 really was. Listening to the tour guides on the Tram and looking around museum showed us how truly terrible the time ... read more

What a difference a day makes (and a decent night’s sleep!) After what felt like a very long day yesterday, we had a nice quiet night in our motel room and managed to get a good nights sleep. We awoke today feeling very refreshed and with the added bonus of sunshine peeking in the curtains, which made a pleasant change from the endless rain we had yesterday! As we left the motel, the owners mentioned the drive down the coast was lovely, and specifically recommended a bay about an hour away where you could see the seals. Armed with this knowledge, we jumped in the car, sunglasses on, windows down and set off on our way. The drive down to Christchurch was about 3.5hrs according to the sat nav, but we probably took 3hrs to do ... read more
