We had some great time since the last entry. The weather got worse though, however we expected it so no disappointment there.. We tend to arrive somewhere and find some great walks which are usually free. New ZealandTourism is trying to make so much money on tourists, it is unbelievable. One of the walks was a walk round Punakaiki and Pororari River. You can hire a kayak there as well. The look of the rocks and mirror-like river is just beautiful. We went for a swim naked as well before all the tourists could see us! I really liked town called Hokitika, shame it was raining all day as we ended up in the library. Hokitika is known for a green stone called Jade http://www.jadecountry.co.nz/ It is a beautiful stone but expensive one! We headed towards ... read more

My Aussie mate Jeffrey had never visited mainland New Zealand in his many years on this earth, despite his home town of Sydney being located on the West Island of NZ!! He's accumulated enough Kiwi (and temporarily Kiwiland-located) buddies during his travels around the rest of the world though and we all persuaded him it was about time he visited. As I was about to leave this wonderful country we decided to travel around the South Island together, visiting friends and seeing some nice stuff along the way. I collected our little hire car - quickly christened Betty - in Christchurch and drove back up to Nelson to pick up Jeff. The radio worked for 40 minutes of the 5½ hour journey so I was very pleased to meet up with friends in Nelson for a ... read more

After saying our goodbyes to Elspeth, our gracious hostess, we left the little orchard on the estuary at 9:42AM, forty-two minutes past our planned departure time. We had relative clear skies for our drive ahead to the West Coast of the South Island. The state highway sliced through the Kahurangi National Park in a couple of places as it left the orchard and pasture land and rose up through the Buller Gorge. The road climbed as it followed the course of the Buller River that carved a winding path on its way to the Tasman Sea to the west. We passed over so many streams that apparently they gave up creative names and turned to measurements as descriptions. For those keeping score at home: Eight Mile Stream, Nine Mile Stream, Ten Mile Stream, Four Mile Stream, ... read more

Day 15 – Monday the 28th of March So far we have ticked off 20 of the 101 Must Do’s for Kiwis, at least in the South Island anyhow, and all over the last 15 days. Today we ticked off number 20... the Buller Gorge. Thanks for being so patient waiting for the latest blog. We had written them, but simply had no time, nor service in order to post them. But now we are settled in the Abel Tasman town of Marahau, having a quiet wine and homemade meal and catching up on our honeymoon blog. We awoke this morning in what was the former township of Lyell, now just a DOC site of grass, trees and walking tracks. So we decided to set off this morning to explore one of those walking tracks to ... read more

Day 14 – Sunday the 27th of March Only one week left of our honeymoon. If only we could win the lottery, then we could be free to roam the world in campers. It’s official, we truly believe camper van holidays are the only holidays to have. So much fun! From Lake Mahinapua we drove to Hokitika to see the glass blowing studio, apparently it’s a must if you’re passing through the town. Being on holiday you totally lose track of the days of the week. It’s Sunday today....hehe. So the glass blowers weren’t there as it’s their weekend. We took a look around the studio at the ridiculously priced pieces and decided on a smaller, much cheaper momento. Shantytown was our next adventure stop. It said in the brochures to allow 90mins to soak it ... read more

Back again, and what an experience we had Saturday. Before that, Friday night in Franz Joseph we enjoyed the local spa for over an hour, despite the constant rain. Come to find out a prominent feature of a rain forest such as the West Coast is is…Rain! It had been raining most of the day, and then most of the night also. We were a bit concerned our hike up to the glacier would be wet, but we were prepared to do it nonetheless. Once again, we got lucky! Saturday morning dawned partly cloudy and just got nicer as the day went on. We got to the assembly area in town along with the other 15 or so people that were doing the half day trek with us. We were outfitted in weather proof pants, rain ... read more

Feb. 19, 2011 - Franz Josef Glacier Today we got up and going quickly. We had arrived in a DoC campsite and pitched the tents in the previous evening. The previous day began with a drive to see the Pancake Rocks. These are a strange phenomenon on the west coast, where some rocks look like thin giant pancakes stacked atop of one another. Very interesting, if somewhat bizarre, to see. We left, having decided to drive somewhere to camp, and headed back south along the coast. On the way Chad spots on the side of the road our German friend Mariana, who we met on Stewart Island. It truly is a small world among New Zealand's tramping community. We stop and chat with her for a while. We told her we were going to check out ... read more

Our first stop on the West Coast was Punakaiki for its ‘Pancake’ rocks. One of those things you see in the tourist brochures and it looks kind of neat. Plus it was pretty much the farthest we could realistically drive in a day from Wharariki Beach. The distances in New Zealand aren’t that far compared to what we’re used to, but the roads are so twisty-turny it’s tough to travel much faster than about 60km/hr due to all the tight turns. The rocks at Punakaiki have been pounded and eroded by the rough Tasman Sea and kind of look like stacks of pancakes. We think that it’s a bit of a stretch, but ok, still interesting. Next we headed to Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers which are probably the biggest tourist attraction in the region. At ... read more
