Part I of the Faulkner/Blunt visit to New Zealand! Christmas Day 2008 - 6pm we pick up Michele, Lindsey, Lisa, Mikey Faulkner and Stephen Blunt from airport in Christchurch. Their flight arrived early and they were outside waiting for us! Stephen and Sydney had a happy reunion, as did the rest of us. We took a little drive through Christchurch and a walk along the Avon before heading to the hotel - The LivingSpace. It was a great place with several common rooms for watching movies, cooking, reading, or in our case just catching up. We cooked a ham dinner with several side salads and new pototoes and pavlova for dessert. It was a really relaxing and casual Christmas dinner. Boxing Day, Dec 27 and 28 - Everyone got a good night's sleep and we headed ... read more

Thomas mener seriøst, fuglene hernede er dummere ... read more

So, here we are at the end of week one...I have been on call one evening, called in at 2130 for a swallowed apricot stone, otherwise not too bad. Did a "ceesar" (c-section...hadn't done one in ten years...used 0.5% "heavy" bupivicaine versus 0.75%) on my first day, another later in the week...went amazingly well. Also did a full day of ortho on friday, hip, knee and a three level decompression lum lam on a very nice Kiwi 80 year old woman who didn't wake up for two and a half hours after a three hour desflurane sleep. I was worried. We are in our house at 47 B James Street, moved in on Thursday afternoon, my post call day off. Getting settled in, figuring out what we need, and how things work. Bought a George Foreman ... read more

I figured that I better write while things are relatively fresh in my head, and before I get started at work tomorrow. What an experience thus far! Our flight from LAX to AUK was quite eventful with some clear air turbulence about half way across that made Jack "concerned" in that it caused the 747 to bank to the right 15-20 degrees for a short period of time. The pilot asked the in cabin crew to take their seats. Things smoothed out somewhat, then in about 30 minutes became smooth for the duration. The flight was not very full, so both of us got our own row to stretch out in and we snoozed for a number of hours on our 12 1/2 hour flight. When the clock struck midnight (we left LAX on the 30th, ... read more

We haven't been in the habit of creating a Christmas letter and sending it and cards out to friends...not because we don't love and miss our friends and family, but because we just haven't gotten into the habit of it. I did, on this Christmas, want to pass along our warmest wishes to all of you reading this, and our prayer that the Lord will pour His Blessings out on you and yours during this season and throughout the year. Our family had our real Christmas at Thanksgiving when all three of our sons were here for not only the holiday, but for the TV version of the CU-Nebraska game and my official last day at work. I received a link to a great video of a light display that I think you will enjoy: http://www.noniusers.com/2008.html ... read more

It is pretty amazing that after thinking and talking about going down under, we are actually only a week and a half from getting on a plane/time machine and being whisked off from the familiar confines of Colorado. It has been quite the Christmas Season, what with the parties (Sandra's and Ann's, my surprise retirement party at our house orchestrated by Nahid and her trusty aides as well as the CPMG party at Strings Restaurant. Wow. The best part is that I have gotten this far without putting on any added weight...quite the accomplishment. So much good eating to be done and so little time... I am new at this blogging stuff. I ran one five years ago for my son's cross country team, but the setup for that was very different, and you will be ... read more

At Home in Timaru Yesterday we attended Timaru Hospital’s Staff Christmas BBQ. As we sat soaking up the warm sunshine under brilliantly blue skies enjoying a barbeque with Christmas music playing in the background, Randy looked at me and said, “Isn’t this strange? Christmas music in the summertime in December?!” We have now been living in Timaru since August; just over 4 months, and we are feeling quite at home here. I never wrote in the blog much about our house, so let me tell you a little bit about it. We are living in a very old house that has been renovated several times by various owners. I believe it dates back to the late 1800’s; it may have been one of the first houses built in Timaru. We see a lot of this type ... read more

November 1 & 2 - The Holtons The first weekend in November, Gregg and I had a chance to sneak away to Christchurch for the night, without the kids, to visit Jinks and Linwood Holton. It was a visit that we were very much looking forward to as the Holtons were the first friends from Virginia to book a visit to New Zealand. Sydney was busy with a local community theatre production, "Watch out for Children", and couldn't get away. The boys were content to stay home and hang out with friends and have Sydney and a few of her friends act as babysitters in our absence. Gregg and I had a great time tagging along as part of the Elderhostel group for dinner and a lecture on Saturday, and a tour of Banks Peninsula and ... read more

Timaru is a small, quaint town and there isn't much to see or do here. We are back next to the Pacific Ocean but today's foggy day nixes our idea of visiting the beach. It is a chilly breeze again. Though the temperatures are in the high-teens, you'd never say it was warm unless you have a sheltered spot in the sun. So there we are. Not a touristy place but perfect for us as it has the Internet capabilities we need to finally up date the blog. Tomorrow--Dunedin!... read more
