Nelson seems like it would be a great place to live. There are plenty of biking trails and green spaces. The city centre has plenty of shops and restaurants. There are a few average hikes in the area (like walking in the hills to the midpoint of New Zealand) but there isn't much in this small city to make it worth a stop in its own. I forgot to take a single photo during the 2 1/2 days I was there. Instead, it seems like a lot of travellers stop in Nelson after crossing to the South Island from Wellington and before going down the west coast, or to make arrangements to get to Abel Tasman National Park.... read more

The place to be": The Mussel pot. The village qui ne ... read more

Geo: -41.2708, 173.284We enjoyed a sleep in and leisurely start to the day. We woke to find the heavy rain of last night had passed leaving relatively clear blue skies. We checked out of our Blenheim accommodation and drove north to check out the coastal town of Picton, where the ferry departs for Wellington and the North Island. Picton was a pretty place, a small beach town, surrounded by lush forest overlooking a turquoise bay and impressive fjord. After some time here, we were ready to start todays main objective; tasting Marlborough wines. Our first stop at Saint Clair was a bit of a fail, the winery being closed for renovation. Fortunately there was a local foods business on site with cheeses, fudge, mushrooms and honey available for tasting. We walked away with one of the best ... read more

Donderdag 9 Januari 2014: Om 11u schiet ik wakker en realiseer me dat ik me ferm overslapen heb. Ik had men wekker wel gehoord maar dacht nog even te blijven liggen. Dat even werden 3 uur! Ik ben in men nopjes.

Dan beland ... read more

Tuesday 24rd December, 2013. Nelson, South Island, New Zealand Christmas Eve - and another travelling day. Today we are heading to Nelson, the third largest city on the South Island. We are not looking forward to another big city hostel as they are usually skanky - or at least the punters are! We drove straight there as we wanted to have the opportunity to look around and to get the supplies in for Christmas as we have been told everything will be shut. M wrote a list while we were driving. We arrived and found the YH easily - the only problem was parking (there wasn't any free parking at all!). However our luck was in! After 5.00 the public car park around the corner would be free until boxing day! So we paid or 1 ... read more
