Day 64 An early start - we got a bus to the ferry terminal where we caught the ferry headed for the South Island! It was a really scenic trip. Once on the otherside, we got on the Kiwi bus that was awaiting us and stopped for some lunch at a little swimming spot. Stuart braved the water, then we headed to Nelson. It is a really pretty little town and we wanted to stay an extra night but the next bus was full so we could only stay one night. We had dinner in the bar and did some wine tasting. The girl was just reading the labels on the bottles but we weren't complaining as she gave us loads of each wine! It was funny. ... read more

Saturday. It got sunny, at last. Lovely on ferry trip from Picton to Wellington this afternoon - 3 hrs, though I was a bit bushed and just zombied my way through some of it... saw beach this morning at Nelson and went for walk along same said, but water about as cold as the Glaciers, so gave swim a miss. Had one of my best meals last night - have not commented much on food as it has generally been okay, but nothing to rave of. Last night 'Spices' Malaysian restuarant in Nelson bumped up the standard a bit, a verrry tasty Vegetable Korma - and they did not charge extra for the rice - how outrageous! and it was already reasonably priced... as you can see, when one, i.e. 'me', travels, some of the smaller, ... read more

the longer i am in this country the more i think everyone here is simply prone to gift giving. i don't mean gift giving in a material sense....i mean they are consistently imparting little life gifts. after melissa left i flew from auckland to nelson (on the south island) to meet up with michelle again, but had to wait for a few days before she could make it to nelson. at any rate, i have spent the past 2 nights with an great family!! marcus, jane, and 'wee' annabelle, oh an profit (the dog). remember rhondda and john....marcus is rhondda's son. he has the same sort of enthusiam for life that rhondda has. jane and marcus are both teachers....incredibly welcoming and warm....it's encouraging that they are teaching this country's young people. 'wee' annabelle is their new ... read more

When last you left these intrepid bloggers, we were getting ready to head out on a day's hike over the Tongariro Crossing, supposedly the best one-day trek in NZ, as well as the setting for Mordor in Lord of the Rings. Unfortunately, we'll have to take the guidebook's word for it. The weather had kept anybody from going this year, and we were no exception. After a day spent on the beautiful shores of Lake Taupo, we headed down to Wellington, known as the Windy City. Actually, it had quite a bit in common with Chicago, especially in the way it crushed Auckland, NZ's NYC. While the wind was constant and chilling, it wasn't much of a difference for us. After getting in the first night, we actually came across a bar named after our home ... read more

Happy New Year from sunny New Zealand! Hope you all have a great 2006 with lots of fun and adventures! Well I left Australia behind and have just spent 10 days in the north island of New Zealand. I met up with my Dad in Auckland and it is nice to have some company for the next month. Auckland was a bit wet but since then the weather has been glorious! Enjoyed a nice meal in the revolving restaurant of the sky tower in Auckland, went on a hole in the rock cruise in the Bay of Islands and spent Christmas in Rotorua. Christmas Day was lovely we went on a cable car, did a luge ride, patted baby lion cubs at Paradise Valley and went to a Polynisian thermal Spa! Boxing Day we went out ... read more

Went to WOW today which is the World of Wearable Art and collectable cars. It is such a cool place. It is a museum which houses costumes from the annual World of Wearable Art shows. All the costumes are really crazy and are made of weird stuff. Anyone can enter a costume and the best ones end up on the show in September. There are various categories but bizarre bras was my favourite. The designs had to be seen to be believed! Animal heads seemed to be a VERY popular choice. As well as the costumes there were the cars which were less interesting to me but still very cool. They had a very nice classic pink Cadillac which I liked the look of. I don't think it would be very practical though as it was ... read more

Med farjan "Blueridge" aker vi over sundet till sydon. Nu har vi tankt borja vandra mer intensivt och beger oss direkt till "Sunny" Nelson dar det regnar. Greetings from Takaka and the Golden Bay! Chippy and I bid farewell to Caitlin in Picton and left the Bluebird ferry behind in a cloud of wheezing exhaust. She'll stay there for a few weeks working for accomodation while I explore the beautiful Golden Bay area on my own. My first stop was Nelson, and believe me, I had every intention of finding a job there... Like a good Wendy Wellesley, I made up a resume filled with all my hospitality and customer service experience and went door to door in the little beachside town. Unfortunately, the only place hiring was a bakery and they didn't look too enthused with my lifeguarding abilities. My first two nights I stayed at a vibrant hostel called the Palace. It's an old converted Victorian home with only 5 beds ... read more

We'd found a hostel in the Lonely Planet that was a short walk from the beach, and headed straight down to the beach for our first sunbathing session. It was a great beach and we lazed around for a few hours watching the kite surfers and doing crosswords but not venturing into the water as it was freezing! One of Lin's goals coming to New Zealand was to do a Paraglide. Having done parasailing in Bay of Islands, this was the next step and she arranged for a trip with Nelson Paragliding. Her instructor Stuart drove us from the Hostel to the jump site in his 4wd jeep. He told me if they lost height during the glide, I'd have to drive it down the steep road on the hillside (fun and scary at the same ... read more

We left behind us snowy Maruia Springs and the pleasures of immersing yourself in hot hot hot water and left for Wakefield near Nelson to stay with Lesley's parents, Ron and Joanne who showed us a good time, great kiwi hospitality and gave us a good bed! We went for a 4 day excursion to the Nelson Lakes National Park, on a round circuit from St Arnaud, up along Rotoiti Lake, stayed at Lakehead Hut, up (up up) onto Angelus Lake and Hut, along the Ridge down to Bushline Hut and finally back down to St Arnaud for well deserved and much dreamt about Cream cakes and coffee... The Park is a vast expanse of Lakes and Peaks. So beware alpine conditions as you'll see... Celine and Scott... read more
