We arrived in Nelson and walked to our hostel. By the time we put our bags down, it was about 4.30pm and we didn’t have enough time to go for a walk before meeting our American friends Matt and Julian for my birthday dinner. We went to a nice pub and had cocktails/beers and dinner - including desserts (plus an additional free dessert I got as it was my birthday, that we all shared). On the next day, we were going for the craziest adventure of our trip! We got picked up at our hostel by Mike while Shaun was eating something that looked like chocolate bread but turned out to be something more like seaweed bread! Our driver was confused because he expected to pick up two additional people, so we waited for a bit ... read more

Geo: -41.1101, 173.011We left Queenstown this morning around 9:45 am, flew to Nelson, and rented a car for a 1 hour drive to the Resurgence Eco Lodge in Motueka. It was the only time that I have driven since we arrived in New Zealand on February 8th. It took a little concentration to make sure I drove on the left side of the road, but I pulled it off without a hitch. We hike around the 50 acre property and then had a nice 4-course dinner at the lodge. ... read more

Woke multiple times to the delightful sound of the rain pounding on the roof. It continued to do so most of the day - a proper downpour and perfectly timed to coincide with a rest day. Popped up the coast to Motueka and had a long chat about plans at the DOC office. All looking good for Wangapeka track and Leslie-Karamea track - I just have to decide which order to do them in. Supplies collected and back to the cottage to prepare the pack for the next few days. A heavy food bag tells me I'm taking too much but I don't mind carrying it both into and out of the trek if not used (better to have and not need than to need and not have). Jotted down 3-night trek plans for both Wangapeka ... read more

So, back to New Zealand. Up at 4.00am, to the airport, Virgin Airways to Melbourne then Air New Zealand home with long stops in Melbourne and Wellington. Sigh........ How extremely boring it is waiting for flight links, but needs must. I'ts nice to go on holiday and visit friends and see new places but it's also good to get back home again. A&M are an inspiration on travelling in young/old age especially when wanting to add a bit of adventure to it. We thoroughly talked through biking in Europe and now hae that to look forward to planning for 2013.... read more

After a leisurely sleep-in in very cosy beds, we visited Grandma Shirley for a brief catch up. She gave me a pile of old photos from my childhood days that brought back a few memories. Fancy your parents keeping valentines day cards from when you were 6! Apparently some girl named Kelly really had the hots for me back then! After a quick photo op, we then headed to the Marsden Valley Cemetary to pay respects to mum and dad. We also walked up to my Grandmother and grandfathers' graves to show the boys. Joseph had the camera and took photos of the gravestones. Next we drove up the Moutere to show the boys the Settlers Cottage, which my ancestors the Harveys lived in. I took the Moutere Highway, then a turnoff and up the winding ... read more

Cath here - Just got reconnected in the North Island - its now 10.30pm Thurs evening. CLASS 3 - YOU TOTALLY ROCK!! We have been chuckling a lot and you are now definitely in the lead with comments! Thanks! Now handing back over to the others to update the diary......... On our last day on the south island we did a few things. First we had to pack up all our stuff, which mum did while we helped by surfing the internet. Then with the car loaded for the last time, we set off to look at a salmon farm. They had big pools with salmon in. One had 35,000 baby salmon, and another one had 8,000 grown salmon. They also had a lake where you could fish for salmon for free, you just paid for ... read more

NEW ZEALND - SOUTH ISLAND 7th September 2008 The day started bad. I was awoken at approx 6am by the gales actually shaking Peter’s house, unhappy. Today we caught the ferry across to Picton, South Island, we we’re sad to say goodbye to Pete, Fiona and the children but we we’re equally exciting about getting back on the road. On the ferry the wind was gale force and really throwing us around. Pili and I sat in the café and had breakfast and watched everyone else turn green, pussies. The crossing took approx four and a half hours, running about an hour late. We finally went upon deck to have a look at the approach into Picton, once we were sheltered by the small islands the weather calmed down a little. Pilar got a little upset ... read more
