Mount Cook - After spending the night in Twizel (not much to do there, but nice hostel with television), we drove to Mount Cook NP the next morning to do some tracking (because willem is such a huge fan of tracking). Normally when the NZ guide books or DOC offices tell you that parts are very steep, then it turns out to be not that steep. But this time I can't think of another word than STEEP climbing on the first hour of the Mueller hut track. From the top (Sealy tarns) there were great views on the glaciar and on mount cook (3750 mtrs). On the way to Geraldine we stopped at Tekapo lake. Mount Cook. Na overnacht te hebben in Twizel (waar niet veel te doen is maar Mt Cook village is helemaal ... read more

Yes, we're in New Zealand... and it's amazing! We landed in Christchurch, the largest city on the South Island and stayed in the first hotel of our travels (thank you Joanna's parents!), complete with swimming pool and spa! We spent our first afternoon exploring the city and its beautiful gardens - they say Christchurch is New Zealand's most English city and coming straight from Australia it felt like a complete contrast! Although the city was great and our hotel was fantastic, the real excitment came when the campervan was delivered to Joanna's parents - this is our home for the next few weeks and it wasn't long before we had stocked it up and hit the road! Our first stop was the tiny French town of Akaroa, which was really cute and we got our ... read more

This is the kind of scenery that belongs on those one word office posters that say "inspiration" or "perseverance". It's that good! Joking aside our jaws were dragging the entire time we were here. Sir Edmund Hillary, the first man to climb Everest, first began exploring his passion for mountain climbing here at Mt. Cook. There is a commerative statue of this most famous Kiwi (he's on the five dollar bill) in front the of the Hermitage Hotel. We arrived in the Mt. Cook village in the afternoon around 2:30pm and immediately decided to hike the Hooker Valley Track. This just barely gave us enough time to get back by sunset but the weather looked "OK"... (Little disclaimer here - the summit of Mt. Cook is pretty elusive and many people spend a few days ... read more

Omarau Backpackers It took us the best part of a day to get from Dunedin (blog: ) to Twizel, which is 50km from Mount Cook. We stayed at Omarau Backpackers. Again we had a fantastic open fire burning, which Jason kept adding log after log, until it was roaring so much we were roasting. We ended up having the place to ourselves on the first night, well almost, we had a mouse accompanying us in the kitchen. Initially we had just planned to stay at this place for one night and then move to Glenntanner Park, which was closer to Mt Cook. However, when we arrived at Glentanner and checked into our cabin, we found out that they had failed to mention that their shared kitchen had absolutely no pans or kitchen utensils. Jason was ... read more

Part deux: So now its 7.30pm, so i can complete todays entry. After going on the internet this morning, we thought about doing a second walk around Mt Cook. Got our bus at ... read more

We left Christchurch early on Monday morning to make our way to Mount Cook (Aoraki is its Maori name). We bought bus tickets which can be used anywhere around both Islands so its really easy to get around. The journey was good, really nice scenery...and nothing like the kiwi experience! Just a normal coach through the mountains with some stops for photo opportunities. We booked into a really cute hostel which feels just like a ski log cabin, it even has a sauna! And I thought this travelling life was going to be hard!! I think I got bitten so many times on day one by the travel bug, i'm loving every minute of it and I haven't used my ghds once! We got to mount cook about lunch time, there are so many different ... read more

Was an early start for us this morning, 5.30am. We packed up and left to catch our 7.15 bus to mount cook. Mount cook (Aoraki) is the highest mountain in the whole of Australasia. It is south of Christchurch and more inland. Our bus journey was comfortable and civilised - unlike steve and jens kiwi experience which sounds like one big orgey! However, our bus driver did like the sound of his own voice and did a full commentary the whole journey on the history of NZ - ok up to a point but it was 7.30 in the morning for christs sake! We stopped along the way several times as the scenery in New Zealand is absolutly breath taking. The first stop was at Lake Tekapoo which was amazing. A huge lake with mountains ... read more

Have a look at the map and read the comment to see the helicopter route and the wedding location ********** The main reason why we chose to get married in a private ceremony - and by private we mean just the two of us - was so it could truly be our day. With our families living in different countries and speaking different languages, a traditional wedding would’ve been even more stressful than it normally is. As nice as it can be to share such a special moment in your life with the ones you love, it would’ve been difficult for us to really relax and enjoy, what was supposed to be, after all, our big day. There's no denying this option also had an added advantage - it would be much easier and quicker to ... read more
