Podpływaliśmy ... read more

As Mike Patton once quipped while playing a 'heavy' music festival "So where are all the fat people?!" Honestly I have yet to see an overweight traveller under the age of 50 here... could this mean that the world is finally fighting back against the spectre of obesity that has been holding us down and raping us in the mouth with a hot dog these last few years or does it mean that all of the fat people are staying at home, ashamed to go out into the world? Hopefully that's not the case. Today I took a trip (figuratively) back in time; I drove to Manapouri, a small town where my family used to holiday every other year when I was a kid... if I'm not mistaken, it was also the location where we spent ... read more

Today I have a day off, and armed with a bike, helmet and a map, courtesy of John, Caroline’s husband, I set off on my cycle to the nearest town – Manapouri. The bike is in need of some tlc – gears don’t change all the time, and it definitely needs some wd-40, but I eventually reach Manapouri. The views on the way are of grassland and cows….. I could easily be in Wales, especially as it is overcast and fairly chilly (well I am wearing a long sleeve thin jacket). So as I cycle past a campsite, the odd café dotted here and there, and a cluster of house I guess I have arrived. I follow some signs to the tourist information, but this turns out to be only an information centre for the cruises ... read more

Doubtful Sound: Left Wellington to travel to the Doubtful Sound New Zealand's 2nd largest Fiord. Captain Cook named the lace after Doubting his ship could traverse through the Sound to land. Joseph Banks had wanted to explore the flaura and fauna of the area, but Cook decided they would be better left alone and sailed on leaving a dotted line on his map indicating he wasn't sure of the land's shape and contours. He also wrongly named the place a sound, the 10 sounds are fiords, they were created by glaciers pushing through the landscape hewing the rock. Anyway, we were unprepared for the remoteness of this place. From Queenstown we took a bus 2 hours to Manapouri. Then you get a ferry for 45 minutes across lake Manipouri, off the ferry onto a bus over ... read more

Well, I've had a long, but relaxing day. Long because it started at 6:30 in the morning when I hopped on a bus for Manapouri (a small town about thirty minutes from Te Anau) and only ended eleven hours later. At Manapouri, I boarded a ferry which carried myself and others to the far side of Lake Manapouri (about one hour on the water) where we boarded a bus. For forty-five minutes the bus slowly made its way up an unsealed road to the Wilmot Pass for our first view of Doubtful Sound. Wow! Then it was down to Deep Cove and the Break Sea Girl, a ketch that would take fifteen of us on a four hour cruise of Doubtful Sound (actually a fijord). The weather is fantastic, with a bright blue sky and next ... read more

We were going to leave the motorhome at the campsite at Manapouri for our overnight cruise along the Doubtful Sound but when we walked down to the jetty (called Pearl Harbour) the night before we noticed an overnight ‘free’ carpark and was told that it was quite safe to leave it here. As we would have a long walk to the jetty with our overnight bag we decided that was what we would do. There are only about three regular boats that travel along Doubtful Sound, one takes 60 passengers and the other two 14. We decided to go with the latter and chose a boat called M.V. Tutoko II. Doubtful Sound is the second largest of Fiordland National Park’s 14 fiords and the deepest at 421m. It is three times larger than Milford Sound due ... read more
