Up early (again) as we were being picked up from the Motel at 7:30 and being taken to the Railway station for a 8:15 departure. The trip was advertised as one of the great railway journeys of the world passing through the Southern Alps of New Zealand with breathtaking scenery. Guess what... It was bucketing it down. The rain was absolutely pouring down from a low leaden sky and you couldn't see a bloody thing!! The train left on time, stopped after 30 seconds, waited for 5 minutes, and then reversed back to the platform. It was going to be one of those days. Apparently there was a "clunking noise" (technical term). Not to worry we left (again) 5 minutes later and we were off. Good job I brought the Sudoku book! I can only imagine ... read more

Wednesday 22/06/11 Greymouth to Nelson 11.30am in Greymouth After the 'pack up' process again this morning (I'm a bit over having to pack up every morning) and booking a taxi to get me to my bus on time this arvo (1pm) and storing my luggage I head off to McDonalds (again!) for brekky. Cheap as - NZ$5.20 for a hot cakes meal including coffee. That's equivalent to about AUS$3.80!! Nice. Well, it turns out to be a bit grey in Greymouth this morning! It's about 7 degrees celcius and rain, rain & more rain! Makes it a bit difficult to get around so I have no alternative but to go shopping!!! Haha. When I travel I don't tend to buy the touristy souvenirs as I find that when I get home I never look at them ... read more

This morning was a bit of a rush due tothe fact that my shuttle was picking me up @ 7.30am which isn't too bad except for the fact that not only did I have to be up and showered and dressed, but all of my belongings also have to be packed up etc. etc. But I am getting better at it. I arrived at the train station in plenty of time and found that they had given me a table of 4 all to myself. Yay. I overheard some of the people on the train talking about the erathquakes in Christchurch. It seems to be on everyone's mind. And funny, but it felt lilke a bit of a relief pulling out of Christchurch. I don't think I was the only one on the train who ... read more

We are on the road early again, away by 08:00 We are initially on a secondary road that is a bit winding. As we get through Waiau we pick-up the highway 7 that will take us through the Lewis Pass. We pass mountains shrouded in clouds. Although there are some winding mountain roads, a good deal of the roads is straight, and passes through the forest. It is a lot less daunting than I had imagined. At one point we were held up by hundreds of sheep that were being herded down the main road. The roads a very quiet and we see very little traffic. We stopped for lunch at Springs Junction, which is about halfway across the island. We are both starving as we set off without breakfast. We arrive at the campsite in ... read more

So I have been in New Zealand for about a week now and feel like I have seen very little of this beautiful place. It looks like I might have to extend my stay. The past couple of days I have been hanging with my friend Tristan on the west Coast, a plance called Barrytown, just noth of Greymouth. My days have been filled with walks on the Beach, kayaking in the rivers, and walks in the woods. This place is truly amazing, so lush and full of life and activities. Prior to my stay in Greymouth I traversed the southern Alps with some friends. We chose one of the harder tracks in Arthurs pass, so that we could avoid the crowds and challenge ourselves. The rangers at the park told us that three groups have ... read more

The drive down to the pancake rocks was a very short one but we decided to head out early to avoid the ‘rush’ of tourists that would be heading there as well. It is a well constructed walk on a tarmac path (at last somewhere without loose stone and rock) that went around the edge of the cliff. It has lots of stops but the first ones aren’t that impressive and we were starting to feel a little disappointed. As the walk is surrounded by large trees you can’t see the next part of the walk or the rocks so it was quite nice to turn a corner and find the large surge pool. It definitely isn’t somewhere you would like to fall into. The sound was great as you could hear the water crashing into ... read more

HI Sorry I have not posted sooner. Internet in NZ is a real challenge - or non existant. Or shuts down when you don't want it to. Anyhow - interesting drive to Christchurch two days ago - I drove most of the way. Due to some map difficulties and address problems - it took a couple hours to get to our hotel. It was lovely - very much Edwardian - including no internet. Nice restaurant. Walked half an hour to Botanical gardens - I was NOT going to drive ! - gardens were lovely. Walked for several hours so felt I deserved a good meal and a few extra calories. W ehave starteda tradition of a sof wine in the evenings with a plate of cheese and crackers. lovely way to end the day. then on ... read more

Firstly, thank you to my cousin Marilyn for making me realise there are actually people out there reading my blog and as a result, inspiring me to continue with my retrospect blogging! We could afford to relax a bit, so we slept in and spend the morning giving the Weka bird breakfast, who by this stage figured out we weren’t axe murderers and could be trusted enough to bring its offspring along this time. I feel a bit guilty about feeding the native wildlife, but the Weka isn’t endangered so I could justify my actions to myself. By this stage the kids had find a little buddy in the next unit, so while we pack up they run around trying to find the Weka’s nest. Hubby and I hop in the car and pick up the ... read more
