Fox Glacier and Southern NZ Thur., Feb. 18th and Friday 19th We had a rainy drive from Arthur’s Pass to the West Coast and Glacier Land of NZ -however if you are going to have rain - better while you are driving than while you are doing the fun things. We were schedule to do a Heli-Hike of Fox Glacier, but morning today, Friday, Feb. 19th had clouds which grounded us, so we were able to add on the ground ascent of the Fox Glacier. Fox Glacier is one of 140 glaciers in NZ, but is fairly accessible. The base of the glacier is only a few miles from the ocean and ends in a Rain Forest - seems odd, we know. So we donned the special boots they included - like Marine boot camp boots ... read more

Well we arrived at Fox Glacier expectant of some stunning scenerey and the initial drive to it did not dissapoint! However upon arriving a thick fog enveloped the town of Fox and we were unable to see the mountains let along the glacier! We had booked a heli hike and it didnt look good, although we needn't have worried as the weather cleared the following day and we were on! Firstly, you get how can I say it what is a rudimentary safety briefing telling you to sit calmly in the crash position should the helicopter be plummeting to its demise. Yeah right, I think we all know you are a gonner in that scenario. We got picked up by some young pilots who had seen Top Gun a few too many times (not that I ... read more

We left Wanaka headed for the glaciers via Haast pass - one of the most incredible scenic routes in NZ. We were expecting proper hairy driving but actually it was fine, as always - nice wide roads and a 25/35/55/65km/h warning before each bend - a fantastic idea so that you can gauge the turn. Apart from our customary mid-morning 'trim latte' stop (there is no semi skimmed here just full fat and 'trim') we didn't really stop until Lake Paringa. Loz has picked up a very useful 'taste New Zealand' guide and is seeking out some of the foodie hotspots. This one was a winner - a salmon farm in a random hamlet. We picked up a chunky piece of smoked salmon and a piece of fresh salmon for $6 (£3) each and had the ... read more

...and I did it! This has got to be one of the most amazing experiences of my life! Less than 24 hours after deciding to actually do a skydive I have already jumped out of the plane and landed again! It cost quite a bit but well worth every hard earned penny. We meet the dive company at 5 and they took us over to Fox Glacier to a ting air strip (it was in fact just a few caravans and an old road and the world's smallest plane!) I signed the "if I die it's not their fault form" and then got straight into a jump suit. There was a brief safety talk and a guide through how to jump out the plane properly. Dan and I were the last two to jump so we ... read more

This morning we got up and decided to drove down to see the glaciers. It was overcast and really cold. We stopped off at Franz Josef glacier and hiked up to a viewing point to see it. It was really cool to go look at. I had never seen a glacier before and it was nice to be able to have a visual to put with the word. It's amazing how the glaciers can retreat and reform, and how it looks like frozen movement. Like water or snow just frozen in time, even though they slowly are moving. It started to rain while we were hiking around, so we decided to go back in the car and drive down to Fox Glacier instead of embarking on a longer hike to the glacier. We got a place ... read more

We left the sunny shores of Lake Wanaka. It was warm and had lots of sand flies so thick you breathed them in while just standing. The full moon over the lake last night was magical. We went to Puzzle world just outside Wanaka. It was fun and well worth the couple hours and laughs,.. We went through the maze and Ken won collecting all the towers and getting out before Chad and Laura We stayed at the Wyndem Resort. Washed our laundry, sheets and stinky socks. It was great to have our own rooms and beds and 2 showers within 24 hours. Ken and Chad came up with a new curse word for the trip... " Bundaberg" which is a very nasty rum. We got up from our warm beds, showered, and had breakfast, did ... read more

You have seen the opening picture so you know what I did. I jumped out of a plane at 12,000 feet and plummeted at speeds of 120 mph (200km/h) towards the earth. What possessed me to do such a thing is a question you may ask. And that is a good question. Let me try to explain how this all came to be. Living and travelling in New Zealand has given me the opportunity to meet many people. Some adventurous, some less adventurous but many have taken the time to explain how they ended up sky diving and how much fun they had in the process. Secondly, this has been a challenge that I have set for myself. As everybody else can do it well why can't I? Saturday we had camped on the beach in ... read more

Fox, October 18 - 21 You can't go to New Zealand and not climb a glacier, the only decision is which one? Fox or Franz Josef? We chose Fox because we had heard it wasn't as busy as Franz Josef and we had heard only good things from people who had done it. We met at the Fox Glacier Guiding building (just a short stroll from the hostel because Fox is the tiniest town) at 9.15am to get our gear on. We had to wear thick wollen red hiking socks and hobnail boots - these weighed a ton so it was an effort just to walk to the bus that would take us to the glacier. Our first glimpse of the glacier was of something that looked like a big dirty rock. The terminal face is ... read more
