It was a beautiful morning to cross the sounds, although I felt decidedly dodgy, which was compounded by the twistyness of Queen Charlotte Drive - but what a drive. The view from the road was spectacular. We arrived in Nelson and opted to stay at the Palace, a victorian house overlooking the town. We went out for a couple of drinks and met a girl from Arran - we scots get everywhere!!! The following morning we went to the local market - loads of organic food and arts and crafts (we only made a couple of small purchases). An early start for our kayaking trip along the Abel Tasman. We drove to the base (it was cheaper than getting picked up!!) and arrived in advance of our youthful companions on the Kiwi Experience. Decked out in ... read more

Upon returning to reality all hell broke loose, the fantastic Audis transmission decided to die on me and I was stuck in the middle of no where. It was just what I needed, i just kept thinking why oh why do we bother with technology when all it does is just make you stress, give you a headache and then leave you with an empty wallet. Anyhow, luckily I found a few Czechs and a German guy to help me push and tow the car away to Glenorchy, a tiny little town about 50km from Queenstown. The people there were very nice and sympathetic to my situation and gave me two nights free accomodation in a quaint little cabin. They were real characters and was a really nice alternative to the folks in Queenstown, most ... read more

Aoraki ( or Mount Cook ) is definitely an impressive sight. Hidden amongst an entire range of snow capped peaks, it stands gracefully against a teal blue backdrop that manages to make you stare for what feels like a lifetime. Certain crazy people attempt to climb the beast but not I. The weather seems to be the key component here as it changes at a drop of a hat. The wind has a personality all of its own and it grabs you with a menacing chill. Continuing south, is the charming little town of Wanaka, it has a beautiful lake with Mount Aspiring dominating the view. Hopefully this town will stand up against the plague of the tourist dollar unlike its counterpart Queenstown, another 70 km south.Queenstown is the tourist mecca of the southern Isle, ... read more

My most recent adventure was a visit to the breathtaking Milford sound area, which is actually a Fiord. It is one of the natural wonders of the world and now I see why. It was a bitter cold day out there but well worth the journey. The water around here can be quite rough too, but fortunatley I did not have to experience it. I stayed in a rustic lodge near the sound that recieves it's electricity from a large generator. There is not much else out here, but really what else does there need to be. It is beautiful and treking and cayaking are the main activities. Put this on your list to see next time you travel to New Zealand. Cheers. Graham... read more

Funny thing about New Zealand weather is that you never know what tomorrow will bring. We actually had to postpone our planned activities on several occasions while trekking due to unforeseen bad weather. For instance, our scenic flight to Milford Sound was delayed 24 hours but to avoid arriving to Franz Josef Glacier late, we just extended our scenic flight (through www.glenorchy.net.nz) all the way up the West Coast, through Mt Cook to Franz Josef. Perhaps, the weather made our scenic flight even better since it snowed the day before capping the mountain ranges with a soft blanket of white. Once we arrived in Milford Sound, we took a cruise (www.realjourneys.co.nz) to the Tasman Sea where we spotted waterfalls, dolphins, and seals. ... read more

New Zealand’s South Island is a remarkable contrast of awe-inspiring mountains, fjords, glaciers and deep canyon raging rivers with rolling pastures, forests and smooth deep blue lakes. It is almost a third larger than the North island but has only a fourth of the population. In spite on this fact, we managed to get into two big traffic jams…sheep traffic! We were really amused to find ourselves right in the middle of a herd of sheep (twice) as they were being moved from one pasture to another. It’s hard to believe, but getting there really is half the fun. We set sail from Wellington on the inter-island ferry on a beautiful sunny morning. The ferry ride was not only a comfortable mode of transportation but a scenic cruise through Cook Strait. Earlier in the week we ... read more

We spent two days in Manapouri so that we could visit two of New Zealand's famous Fiords. On Friday, we drove up to Milford Sound along a spectacular two-hour road into the wilderness. On Saturday, we took a cruise across Lake Manapouri, a 4x4 bus across a seriously rocky mountain pass and then spent the day on a catamaran on Doubtful Sound (so called, because when Captain Cook first set eyes on the fiord from the Tasman sea he refused to enter on the grounds that he was "doubtful" that he would ever manage to sail his ship out again). The highlight of our day was spotting a group of bottlenose dolphins as well as another, rarely seen, Albatross. That night we drove onto Queenstown...... read more

Thanks to Ruth, (a friend of a friend) I was able to make an hour-long flight over the Milford Sounds area which is the Fjordland in NZ. The whole journey was amazing passing over high mountains, glaciers, hidden lakes, waterfalls and creeks. I would recommend anyone who's visiting to do this trip both by air, and then by cajak. You won't forget the experience. I have done so much in 4 days that I dind't think possible. I've been driving ever since I first came to Christchurch and I have seen amazing views that NZ has to offer. In one sense it's not much different from the green and nice in Scandinavia but still it's same same but different. After 1700 km in 4 days I'm proud of myself for seing the west, the south and ... read more

We are so lucky. Milford Sound and the Fiordland in general get about 6 meters of rain per year. But we had a real nice day! The way from Te Anau to Milford Sound (which is actually a fiord but for some reason all fiords in NZ are called sounds) is 120km long, with many nature atractions on the way. We stopped in several places for short walks in beautiful scenery. Then we cruised the fiord. It's a nice one but it's really nothing compared to Norway, with all the respect. The Geiranger (I hope I remember the name correctly) is the big winner. However putting this aside, it was lovely. During the cruise we stopped in an underwater observatory where we (mainly Shiri) enjoyed to see a sea-star and some other nice fish, while we ... read more

What a day... Full of adventures! In the morning we left the beautiful hostel in Wanaka, said good bye to all the travellers, and headed south to Te Anau, in the Fiordland. Our first stop on the way was Arrowtown. We didn't find what was interesting in the town except that we managed to shop AGAIN :-) (some beautiful jewlery, yes, again. They have stuff made of a shell called Paua shell, and I fell in love with it). On the way we stopped for WC, and only thanks to that, completely by chance, we saw the steam train that is still opearting in a place called Kingston. For tourist only of course... but still nice. We arrived to Te Anau and booked an evening trip to a cave with worms. Yes, cave with worms, no ... read more
