Cesta dalej viedla tunelom, ktory skor pripominal banicku sachtu (bol bez osvetlenia, bez obkladov stien, s velkymi dierami v asfalte a pomerne strmym sklonom.... brrr... klaustrofobik by tu dostal zachvat), no spolahlivo nas doviedla az do ciela. Ako byva zvykom, Milford Sound nas vital dazdom a tak nam neostavalo ine, ako ubytovat sa v jedinom moznom ubytovacom zariadeni Milford Lodge. Po chvili pobehovania po okolitych ... read more

Woke up this morning to Kea's (huge, cheeky parrot like things) shouting their heads off on top of someones campervan - although thankfully not ours! Headed off this morning to catch our boat for the cruise, which was awesome, although the day was very misty and not as clear as we'd have liked. Observatory was really cool and lots of really nice fish and coral to gawp at! Decided to head back to Te Anau as the lack of civilisation and the thought of spending another night in LOG country was a little daunting :o) Off to Queenstown tomorrow to watch the Haka, visit some kiwis and do Shotover Jet. ... read more

Well after a gorgeous journey to Milford Sound we arrived to be greeted by swarms and swarms of Sand Flies - yuck!! The only comforting thought was that only the females attack you for your blood! Camp site was very basic (although probably to be expected in a World Heritage Site) and to be honest was a little too "League of Gentlemen" for our tastes! Anyway boat trip tomorrow! PS: Meant to say that we stopped off at The Chasm on the way which was awesome! ... read more

Well we are now in Queenstown. Since our last update we have completed what is known as the Southern Senic Route, passing through the seaside town Riverton. On route here we went to the most windy beach ever ... before we even arrived a sand storm was blowing down the road. Riverton was a laid back place (popular with NZ holiday folk). We met some locals staying at our campsite who were mad about tramping (and one chap who talked to us non stop about fishing - i think he might have loved them more than his wife!). We played some table tennis which in the pamdu version actually entails using the floor as well and the number of bounces certainly doesnt count! we're living the crazy life! After a few pictuesque walks and stops (including ... read more

- FOOD: Lunch with the sandflies (don't eat outside here!) - AREA: Wonderful drive to Milford Sound on the most scenic (and not at all dodgy) road. 2 hour boat trip to view the beautiful scenery of the Sounds. - PEOPLE: All pointing their cameras in the same direction at the same time. The usual friendliness of NZers in a different pub. - WEATHER: After rain and avalanches recently, we had sun all day! Wed 17th: After everyone telling us the road to Milford Sound was difficult and dodgy to drive on and after discovering it had been shut the last 4 days due to bad weather and avalanches, the info woman said it was fine so off we went. Luck was with us as the sun was shining and the sky was clear blue (it ... read more

Milford Sounds today and the weather was fantastic- the best its been for a long time apparently! We got picked up for our tour - Ecotours which included a trip to the Teanua Bird sanctuary where our guide (? Dutch eco enthusiast?) showed us round. This was a great tour as he tried to stay away from the other tours who were all on a set itinary. Milford Sounds was beyond belief- boasting the worlds largest cliff edge and worlds highest waterfalls. Due to the excessive amount of rain previous and the clear sunny day the views were awesome. We cruised up the fiord on the Mitre peak - a small touring boat and into the sea and back. We went underwater falls/ sighted penguins/ fur seals and took a few pics!? On the way back ... read more

Back to Milford Sound… that was one of my main attractions to go back to New Zealand, it’s one of the places I really wanted to see also in the winter. And what’s better than a nice sunny day in winter? In winter there are more waterfalls flowing into the fiord, and of course the mountains are all snow-capped. I look in the pictures from my previous visit and see that it was a pretty overcast day - funny to come back in winter and not see even one cloud… Since Marie is with me, we stop in all the places on the way as you do in your first visit. The mirror lakes, lake Gunn, the rapids of Marian creek. I remember most of the places but I still find them stunning. And I simply ... read more

My most recent adventure was a visit to the breathtaking Milford sound area, which is actually a Fiord. It is one of the natural wonders of the world and now I see why. It was a bitter cold day out there but well worth the journey. The water around here can be quite rough too, but fortunatley I did not have to experience it. I stayed in a rustic lodge near the sound that recieves it's electricity from a large generator. There is not much else out here, but really what else does there need to be. It is beautiful and treking and cayaking are the main activities. Put this on your list to see next time you travel to New Zealand. Cheers. Graham... read more

Funny thing about New Zealand weather is that you never know what tomorrow will bring. We actually had to postpone our planned activities on several occasions while trekking due to unforeseen bad weather. For instance, our scenic flight to Milford Sound was delayed 24 hours but to avoid arriving to Franz Josef Glacier late, we just extended our scenic flight (through www.glenorchy.net.nz) all the way up the West Coast, through Mt Cook to Franz Josef. Perhaps, the weather made our scenic flight even better since it snowed the day before capping the mountain ranges with a soft blanket of white. Once we arrived in Milford Sound, we took a cruise (www.realjourneys.co.nz) to the Tasman Sea where we spotted waterfalls, dolphins, and seals. ... read more

New Zealand’s South Island is a remarkable contrast of awe-inspiring mountains, fjords, glaciers and deep canyon raging rivers with rolling pastures, forests and smooth deep blue lakes. It is almost a third larger than the North island but has only a fourth of the population. In spite on this fact, we managed to get into two big traffic jams…sheep traffic! We were really amused to find ourselves right in the middle of a herd of sheep (twice) as they were being moved from one pasture to another. It’s hard to believe, but getting there really is half the fun. We set sail from Wellington on the inter-island ferry on a beautiful sunny morning. The ferry ride was not only a comfortable mode of transportation but a scenic cruise through Cook Strait. Earlier in the week we ... read more
