We made it to Manapouri at the edge of Fjordland National Pack in our leaky Spaceship in time to put it in the garage for repair and catch our ferry taking us across Lake Manapouri. This was the start of our 2 day wilderness cruise in the Doubtful Sound. The lake is interesting in that it feeds one of NZ's largest hydro-electric power stations producing nearly 5% of its electricity, whilst the majority of plant is underground we could see the control station and transmission wires as we crossed the lake. We then took a coach across Wilmot pass to Deep Cove at the heart of Dountful Sound. This 21km stretch of road is completely isolated from the mainland so the few coaches and plant machinery goes back and forth on this stretch! It was only ... read more

This morning we got up and enjoyed the surroundings before eating some breakfast. We were up early, but not early enough to see the sun rise or anything. But it was beautiful out again. The boat has a crayfish pot that they check every morning, so we got to see the crayfish pot being pulled up from the water. There were a bunch of them in the cage....even a small cod shark! The skipper took the shark out of the cage, and tossed it at Adam. It landed at his feet, but he pet him before he got tossed back in the water. After breakfast we started heading back toward the cove. The other ship mate had heard dolphins while she was below deck, and we were able to find them. It was incredible to get ... read more

So today we got up early to drive to Manapouri to start our cruise of Doubtful Sound. We met the coordinator at the Harbor with the other 10 passengers. We got on a big ferry to go across Lake Manapouri (it took about 45 minutes). The weather was cold and overcast. After the ferry, we got picked up in a van by our boat's skipper, John, who drove us over the Wilmot Pass(a 40 minute drive) to Deep Cove, where we were starting our journey. We had booked our overnight with Deep Cove Charters. We picked it because it caps their passengers at 12. Our boat, The SeaFinn, was pretty cool. It was small, but big enough that it never felt crowded. There were spots to sit/stand on the back deck, as well as go up ... read more

Last weekend I went on a cruise with my program to Doubtful Sound. I had already been on a cruise there with my mom but it is still just as impressive the second time around. We did an overnight cruise. The first day we cruised around for a while, and then went kayaking for about an hour, and then jumped off the cruise ship into the water. It felt like you jumped into an ice bath.....burrr. Later that day we saw tons of dolphins swimming and jumping out of the water. They would also ride the waves at the front of the ship. It was so awesome. When we reached the ocean, the sun was setting and we saw tons of seals, sea lions, and pups on the rocks in the sea. I have seen so ... read more

Weather and a traffic accident would mean that we didn’t get to make it to Milford Sound. When we were having breakfast we heard sirens going of twice. We thought that maybe it signalled an avalanche or rock slide so while I was emptying the dirty water out of Ted, Michelle went to the office as to what the sirens meant. When she returned she said she had bad news. The sirens are a calling system for the fire brigade and emergency rescue personnel. A bus had crashed on the Milford road and it would be closed off until 12pm at the earliest. It was 8:55am and we felt pretty deflated as we were really looking forward to seeing Milford Sound. Then an idea entered my head that we could go and see the Doubtful Sound. ... read more

The reason that I had ventured back into the mountains was to view the Doubtful Sounds. I have a habit of asking alot of questions when I am bored and I find somebody that works in tourism that looks bored. So at the i-Site in Stewart Island I had got into a good conversation with the lady who worked there. After the usual "This is nice and this is nice" she got down to business and just straight up told me to go to Doubtful Sound. This advice was accompanied with a five minute story of how much she enjoyed it. The woman was convincing. A few days later I asked the lady who worked at the hostel in Dunedin a few questions and in a few minutes Doubtful Sound was mentioned followed by a five ... read more

17th March 2009 - KAYAK TOUR & THE LITTLE GREEN MEN!!! For the first time in ages I was actually woken up by my alarm. 5.45am though so not a normal get up time!! The bus was picking us up at 7am….far too early to function but no choice in the matter. I got up and walked around like a zombie somehow managing to get myself dressed and ready for the day. I was so tired and I would have loved to have stayed in bed for the day. This travelling malarkey is sometimes tough!! The bus arrived at 7am and took us to the Manapouri Office - the meeting point. An American couple were on the bus with us and were your typical Americans….way over the top about everything! At the hut we checked in ... read more

Last week I spent a few days in Fiordland national park, and did an overnight cruise on Doubtful Sound (it is a fiord, but all the fiords here had been named sounds originally). There are 14 fiords in the park, doubtful sounds is the second longest. They are all pretty remote areas, not easily accessible, even Milford sound which is the only one directly accessible by road you have to pass through a 1.5 k tunnel to get to it, and in winter the road is often closed due to avalanches. Getting to doubtful sound is a bit of an adventure in itself, takes an hour by boat accross lake Manipori, then there is a road connecting the far end of the last to the fiord - this road only exists because there is a hydro ... read more

Wednesday March 11, 2009 And now for something completely different…Doubtful Sound. When I was planning my itinerary I debated whether to see Milford or Doubtful Sound. I settled on both. It is getting cooler here. All the peaks in the area have shown additional accumulations of snow in the past three days. I actually used the little space heater provided with the van this AM. Driving to Manapouri this morning on the doubtfulsoundcruise.com bus I see my first deer farm. This “cruise” is different from Milford in several respects. First we (limited to 20) are shuttled across Lake Manapouri by Capt. Mike in a launch just big enough for us to fit The location where we land on the other side is the site of the largest hydroelectric plant in NZ. I won’t go into all ... read more

Feb 26th Since we last logged on we’ve been to the wilds and back! We haven’t been any where to get any possible internet connection. We drove from Queenstown - a lively place with lots of shops and bars & restaurants and places togo Jet water rafting, sky parachuting and the like! to Manapauri. We had enquired about an overnight cruise on Doubtful sound at Queenstown and were told the earliest time would be the 6th March!!! So we went to Manapauri and we went the next morning on the 7am trip. It was a very early start but boy was it worth it. It was dark when we set off and you begin with a 45 minute boat trip across Lake Manapauri- we saw the sunrise over the lake colouring the mountains pink. Then we ... read more
