It was an early morning for our last full day in New Zealand. Today was a day of cabs, busses and boats. A cab picked us up at 7 am and took us to our bus. We were two of the last people on the completely full bus. By 7:30 we headed out of Queenstown and started the 2 ½ hour ride to get us close to Doubtful Sound. The ride was amazing. We had awesome views of lakes on one side of the bus and the mountains on the other side. It is hard to describe how picturesque the scenes are, they don’t even seem real. This was just the first leg of several getting to the Sound. After the bus, we loaded onto a boat that took us across Lake Manapouri, which took about ... read more

After a cup of coffee to fortify myself I will now put the second batch of fotos on - these of my overnight stay at Manapouri Lake and next day trip to Doubtful Sound. Doubtful Sound is named by James Cook ( who else??) who on seeing it was reluctant to take his ship in as he was "doubtful" he could sail it out again given the prevailing westerly winds....he was probably right. Enjoy the fotos. Lv Lynne... read more

Today was the day of my second big excursion in three days -- a trip to Doubtful Sound. I found myself tired, cranky, and not as enthusiastic as I might have been about the long and complex journey required to reach the Sound. Mercifully, as I didn't feel much like walking, the tour bus picked me up right at the YHA hostel. It was a surprisingly small bus, and the driver explained that this was only a transfer bus; we would join the main tour group in Manapouri. Manapouri, as it turned out, was about five miles away. On the way, the driver told us about the diversification of the local farmland, as farmers switched from the once-ubiquitous sheep to beef cattle and red deer. Manapouri was just a wide place in the road. A pup ... read more

The two days we spent on a boat in the wonderful wilderness of Doubtful Sound were fantastic and two of the better days we have had in the four months we have been travelling. Anywhere that takes a boat ride across a lake, a coach over a blizzard hit mountain and another boat through a moody and misty fiord is worth the admission fee alone. It was unlike anything we had done before. The day started with us checking in at Lake Manapouri, which was a short drive from the lake at Te Anua where we had spent the previous evening looking at glowworms. As we boarded the boat at Manapouri, we were joined by a band of over excited youngsters all dressed as pirates and saying "Aaarrrr" loudly every two or three seconds. Being the ... read more

Whilst I’ve been quoting from the top 101 things that Kiwis would like to do, I suppose you’ve all been wondering what #1 was. So were we - we were surprised the Glaciers weren’t higher, and we actually thought it might be something like watching the All Blacks lift the Rugby World Cup ... but no - nothing impossible like that ... #1 is actually Milford Sound and #2 is Doubtful Sound. Everyone has told us that Doubtful is better than Milford, so we plumped to visit there. And we weren’t disappointed! The trip started with an hour’s boat trip across Lake Manapouri where we would have to travel by bus to get to the Sound. First we stopped at One of New Zealand’s Greatest Engineering Achievements - the Manapouri Hydro-Electric Power Station. As early as ... read more

It had to be the best cup of tea ever. I was cold and wet, and the tea was hot and wet. What’s more it was made with real milk instead of the powdered stuff I carry with me, and l was drinking it in the warmth of a ship’s saloon. How I came to be aboard was thanks to the crew - in particular Carol, who’s the nature guide aboard the tourist vessel, “Fiordland Navigator” operated by Real Journeys. It was tied up at the wharf when I arrived at Deep Cove, Doubtful Sound. The crew were farewelling their overnight guests, and my timing couldn‘t have been better. As the bus pulled away, I swung in on the Beast of Burden and asked, “where‘s the coffee shop?” Cue Carol, who invited me aboard to have ... read more

We had our lunch packed and were now ready for our day on Doubtful Sound and yes the sun was shining this time. We went with Real Journey Cruises which also included a tour of the Manapouri Power Station which was maybe an unnecessary stop for us but we tend to be up for anything and it is all actually quite interesting. Actually getting to Doubtful Sound is a bit of a process. It involved a bus drive to Manapouri as we were staying in Te Anau, then a boat ride on the Manapouri Lake to view the power station. We then had another bus ride down to catch the boat for our Doubtful Sound Cruise. Doubtful Sound is a lot bigger than Milford and maybe doubly beautiful. The expanse leaves you breathless and you end ... read more

Our New Zealand word of the day is once again . . . "REMOTE". And with good reason. Here is yet another entry about just how away-from-it-all you can get in this country. If you have been to New Zealand, then you already know that Milford Sound is one of the top tourist attractions. It is located in Fiordland National Park, a 4-5 hour drive from Queenstown. As the park's name implies, Milford Sound is actually a fiord and not a sound (a fiord is a valley carved by a glacier that is filled with water from the sea; a sound is the same but carved by a river). Here is what to expect on your visit to Milford Sound. It will look like a big pretty lake with glimmering blue waters surrounded by tall rocky ... read more
