The following day we left for a trip to a place called Arthur’s pass in Selwyn, Canterbury. The journey took a couple of hours and on the way we stopped at a lovely little place called Sheffield. Well, it wasn’t as lovely as Sheffield, South Yorkshire but its pie shop was very good. We shared a steak and cheese pie (despite being recommended others by a random customer) and a small apple pie on the picnic table outside of the shop. We saw some stunning scenery along the way and once we arrived at the little village high up in huge mountains, we stopped to talk to the people at the information centre for information on walks that we could do the next day. The people told us that unfortunately Arthur’s Pass was due to ... read more

Today I say goodbye to Richard an Ester as I begin to wind my way north again, beginning the eventide of my trip, unfortunatly I've been rather spoiled by the scenery from my previous bus journeys and this 11 hour slog from Te Anau to Christchurch is a struggle, the view although stunning is nothing to compare to the magnificance of yesterday and the continueous rolling yellow hills merge soullessly one into an other, my fellow passangers are very normal, not even an unpleasant habit breaks up the monotony of the day. I suspect this malaise is more to do with my reluctance to accept that my move north is the prequal to going home than any true deficiency in the environment but still as the bus pushes one through accidents and banking sea fog a ... read more

(Day 712 on the road)After the excellent Kepler trek, Suzanne and I headed slowly towards Christchurch, mainly cruising in the van and enjoying the great New Zealand nature. Our first major stop was at Mt. Cook, at 3754 metres the highest mountain in the country. After a night spent wild camping at the base of the mountain, witnessing a spectacular, blood-orange sunset and enjoying very our version of Mt. Cook couscous for dinner, it was time to get closer on the next day. We climbed up one of the mountains just opposite Mt. Cook, which gave grand views of Mt. Cook itself. The weather was as good as it could be, with sunshine and warm temperatures all the way. The views didn't disappoint either, and we whiled the afternoon away at the outside veranda of Mueller ... read more

Tuesday, March 2nd Yesterday's cloudy weather was nowhere to be seen today. The sun was out in full force and we spent our quiet time sitting in our new camp chairs, enjoying the sun and the quiet. We had another great jog followed by some tea in the morning sun. In an email mom Mariana pointed out that she never saw a picture of the newly restored red phone booth at the holiday park in Karamea. Well, there's a good reason for that; it not red yet. The last we saw of it, it had a couple white under-coats on but no red. Talita took it hard because it had been her baby from the start, but there wasn't much we could do about it. Who knows, things move so slowly in Karamea that we might ... read more

Finally, a few more piccies from various outings around the South Island ! To be honest we really didnt do all that much other than work and save pennies whilst we were in Christchurch, although had a really nice few weeks with Becky when she arrived on her travels here, was soooo good to see her ! I dragged her out on a girlie night with some work friends which was a good laugh ! Poor Nath was surrounded by squarking girls for the evening and then woken by about 4 of us trying to squeeze into our little flat to sleep later on that night ! Was not so funny the next morning, I felt like death. My hangovers get worse and worse every time ! Becky, Nathan and I also went for a weekend ... read more
