Well, today I finished reading that thesis. I'm a little closer to deciding what project I will do now. Theses and papers are normally the most boring things to read, with difficult and important-sounding words substituted for easy to read words that mean the same thing. Sometimes they even use long words in the wrong context, which is even more confusing! Honestly, some of these papers could be about dinosaurs that shoot laser beams from their eyeballs being discovered in a remote part of the rainforest...and they'd still be boring. However, this thesis wasn't that bad - it was quite fun to read, which means it is possible to get a PhD without succumbing to words like "utilize". Yesterday I was shown the captive redback spiders, Latrodectus hasseltii, and they were verrry nice. We fed them ... read more

Hello and welcome to my blog! I've never done one before. Let's see if I can keep it up! In the last month I have traveled from my comfortable home in Glasgow city via a country house, a few airports, a university, some wild thyme and a handful of mechanics, to the small but shaky village of Lincoln in New Zealand. I am here to complete my MSci - Master of Science ish - by spending the next year studying the endangered katipo spider. By writing this blog I am hoping to give an insight into what doing an MSci is like. It might also be useful to those contemplating studying Zoology at university or going to New Zealand. Most of all, however, I'd like to shed some light onto a very old order of animals ... read more

Arrived in New Zealand at midday after a good flight from Sydney but we were knackered after hardly any sleep in Sydney airport the night before. All of the people we had encountered in the airport were great; the passport control lady gave us a sight-seeing tips. The dog sniffed dodgy Dim out but the dog handler was lovely and then we had to have our tent screened and the lady there ended up giving us a load of NZ fruits called Fijuans, so a great welcome! We made our way to the Banks peninsula and to Akoroa (a tip from the passport control lady); it was a tiring drive but the scenery was truly breathtaking. We found a parking spot and decided on fish and chips for tea; they were lovely and after we had ... read more

My bus left at 9:30 a.m., and I had three blocks to drag my luggage, so of course I checked out of the hostel just after 8. I arrived at the tearoom that does double duty as the Intercity bus station at 8:35. It wasn't open, of course. I sat on a convenient bench outside until 9; at that point the tearoom opened and the clerk there told me I really should be sitting on another bench around the corner. I moved, and by the time the bus came I had been joined by ten or twelve other travellers. Once we had gotten on, the bus was almost exactly half-full, so everyone travelling alone had a double seat. I asked a young boy sitting opposite me if he would swap seats with me, as I ... read more

Oops got that last bit wrong! After picking up groceries in Queenstown Dave and I trundled up to 12 Mile Delta DOC camp which is on the way to Glenorchy on the shores of Lake Wakatipu. 2/4/10 Good Friday - Drove to Glenorchy then to Chinaman’s Bluff. A young French tramper had missed his ride after emerging from the Rees/Dart River track. A storm had dropped trees and caused slips on the track so he was a day late. We gave him a ride to Glenorchy. On the way we also picked up a young Californian guy who had also completed this track with 3 others. He had left his car at the beginning of the track, some 35km away. We took him halfway back, took the Frenchie to Glenorchy, then decided to drive up the ... read more

31/3/10 - We are currently in Clyde, leaving today for Macetown (near Arrowtown), then Skippers Canyon tomorrow - sorry, this current entry only goes to the 23/3 but we thought we'd let you see what we have been doing up until then, and I will add more with photos when our group trip has finished - they are long days! - but awesome. ....... 17/03/10 Kaikoura - Woke to see snow on the Seaward Kaikouras - no wonder there’s a cold wind. Spotted Des and Christine from Ruakaka (ex-Kerikeri) in their motorhome, so sat and had a chat with them for an hour, then drove to the seal colony, but there wasn’t much happening there. As we were meeting our 4x4 group this evening, we headed to the meeting place at Puhipuhi School site DOC area. ... read more
