Well we spent the week helping out in the garden, weeding mainly. So we did the four hours a day for our accomodation in a nice sleep out and had 3 amazing meals a day. Havent eaten so well in a long time! We went into Akaroa a couple of times which was a nice little town. We met and had a few meals with their frinds which was nice. Also got to see some lamas which one of their frinds keeps. She was kissing them which i found a little disturbing!... read more

Well we left Rangiora and headed to Banks Peninsula for our next block of work. Absolutly beautiful on the way, every corner we went round it seemed to just get more amazing. We were staying near Akaroa up a hill with the most a amzing view of Akaroa over the water. The couple Precilla (a lady from Portland Us) who owns the house and comes over for 1 month a year and Dave a kiwi who lives in NZ full time. There were also anothe couple Sarah and Mike who were also helping out. We had an amzing dinner and then all headed up the top of the hill to watch Mcnaughts comet. It was AMAZING the tail was soooooo long. On our way back a family had a telescope so we had a lokk through ... read more

After packing up the last of our belongings, we headed down to the Escape office nice and early. Our new friend Michelle was ready and waiting for us with our van all nice and shiny and clean. We did the obligatory paperwork and were then really touched to find that Michelle had made us a couple of CDs of bands she thought we might like. One of them, Midnight Oil, I've heard of (an Aussie band from the early 90s) and the other one was new to us both. Blue October are a current Kiwi rock band who have recently had a big 'hit' (I hate that word!) with a song called Hate Me. Our van had a CD player so it'll be cool to have some music to listen to when we lose the radio ... read more

Four weed-destroying, sheep-chasing and tangelo-squeezing weeks later, our time in Opotiki and at Te Aranga has come to an end. As well as being good exercise and a valuable opportunity to learn about many facets of New Zealand life, these four weeks have also been restful beyond our expectations. After some six and half months of constant movement - rarely sleeping in the same bed two nights in a row - it was wonderful to sit still, so to speak, for a while. To eat home-cooked food, to build friendships with new people, to be able to laze away a weekend reading trashy novels without feeling guilty for not being a culture vulture at every instant. Thus it was that - complete with fetching farmers' tans - we hopped back on the bus which took us ... read more

So I’ve finally left the West Coast after over six weeks, collectively, of changing beds, scrubbing showers, cleaning the rainforest and, in Lisa’s more insane moments, hoovering the rocks!! Actually I’m quite sad to have left the place I’ve by far spend the most time in since I arrived in nz. Te Nikau was an amazing place to be, I meet some great, and some very, very weird people. I don’t think there is anywhere quite like Punakaiki and I can think Lisa enough for putting up with me for so long! Enough of the Oscar speech, and back to the travel writing, events of the last few weeks in Puni include. Convincing Jo that she really wanted to kayak up the Pororari River - this was great fun despite the fact that it was more ... read more

For the next leg of my journey I caught the Atomic Shuttle down to Christchurch and co-incidentally travelled with Ronan (home town Armagh), chuckling at the drivers random commentary, and he directed me towards a hostel he had stayed in before, the New Excelsior, close to Cathedral Square. The backpackers felt very run-down, grubby and unsafe in a way like university halls and the tension in the lounge was similar to that of a dentist’s waiting room! I felt so uncomfortable that I booked my second night in Christchurch in a different backpackers down the same street called Cokers but it wasn’t any better, so unfortunately I came away from the city with a rather gloomy impression. The only stimulation I had came from the changing exhibitions in the city art gallery and a maze of ... read more

The dreaded day has finally come - we’re on our way out of New Zealand. But I decided I needed to make the most of this last day. I was up at 4:45am this morning for a quick shower, gathering up my things in the darkness and quiet and slipping out the door while the others slept. Why? To see the sun rise over the Pacific and answer the call of the Port Hills and the Banks Peninsula, who weren’t about to let me go without the courtesy of a proper visit. What a great morning it was. I chose this morning to play the new Kate Bush CD which I’d recently bought, and she was a perfect accompaniment to the dim orange sun, lush hills, still water, tranquil birdsong and deserted roads. Driving out along ... read more

Small town life is good...I've been to another production at the Gaiety Hall. This time it was a play, called "The Onion," about...onions. Actually more of a comedic interpretation of New Zealand based on a family onion farm. The actors (all 2 of them) and the director and sound guy stayed at the backpacker where I work, and the director is an American man, but he got New Zealand residency about 2 years ago. He told me about how hard but satisfying it was to write jokes about NZ that Kiwis would find funny, but he did a good job because the audience loved it. I also saw the local Fireman's Competition, hosted here in Akaroa. Many of the volunteer firemen from the Banks Peninsula came to compete...including owner of Chez la Mer Backpackers, Roy. He ... read more

Akaroa, the town where I live and work, is small. Its got a population of 650 people. Last night, about 10% of the population went out to Gaiety Hall, the town theater, for a show. I went too, as did my co-worker Isabel (from Germany) and friend/surrogate aunt Jean (from England), along with a couple of the guests at the hostel. The show? A BeeGees tribute, with disco suits, flashing lights, and smoke machine! And it was HILARIOUS. Isabel and I were the youngest members of the audience by at least 20 years, in many cases closer to 30-40 years younger. At first, it was hard to tell how the audience would respond to the energy of the music. But as soon as the band started playing Night Fever, the seats cleared and the locals broke ... read more
