AKAROA, NEW ZEALAND I woke up this morning to more heavy fog. I was in Akaroa, my first port on the South Island but getting there was delayed because there was no visibility for the tenders. The fog lifted about 11:00 am and was totally clear about a half hour later. I chose to stay in the small town of Akaroa for the day instead of taking a bus for 50 miles each way to the larger town of Christchurch. Akaroa is a very pretty place and the shops and restaurants that line the waterfront are all “the best in town”. I did the Citywalkz self tour and had done the whole town in about two hours. I noticed some bed and breakfasts and it might be a nice place to visit for short time if ... read more

Sunday 15th December, 2013. Akaroa, Banks Peninsula, South Island, NZ - A Taste of France As we had now got a tour and accommodation booked for tomorrow we decided that we could afford a lazy housekeeping day today. We did another load of laundry and then had breakfast. We decided that we would spend the day walking around the town, taking in the French feel and enjoying the good weather. However, before we started sightseeing we went and purchased some sunscreen and a pair of flip flops for M whose feet were too hot in her trainers. This is the first really hot weather we have had so far this trip. The French flavour is really strong in Akaroa. The street names are the first thing that strike you. The main street, on which our hostel ... read more

Saturday 14th December, 2013. Lake Tekapo, and Drive to Akaroa, Banks Peninsula, South Island, NZ As mentioned in yesterday's blog, Lake Tekapo is a place of exceptional beauty and clarity. The remarkable blue colour of the lake is caused by 'rock flour' i.e finely ground particles of rock brought down by the glaciers at the head of the lake and held in suspension in the melt water. Like Lake Pukaki, the lake is a popular location for fishing, boating, kayaking, swimming and hang-gliding. After breakfast, we loaded up the car and drove down to the lakeside. First we went to the Church of the Good Shepherd which is located on the lake front. The foundation stone of this stone and oak church was laid in 1935 by the Duke of Gloucester. the front window of the ... read more

Geo: -43.806, 172.967We wake this morning with clear sky's. After watching some local news on the television we find out that the cyclonic winds from yesterday have cut a path of destruction across the South Island leaving many roads closed due to fallen tree's and avalanches. (what the hell are we in for today). We head down to the harbor for breakfast before hitting the road. Our journey south zig-zags across farmland and we spot downed trees everywhere as the clouds roll in and it starts to rain. We soon hit Highway 1, and the weather clears, a good omen, we hope. It is a very plain stretch of road and the drive is uneventful until we reach Timaru, the home town of one of the girls Debi works with. We drive onto the esplanade overlooking Caroline ... read more

Today (Monday 24 December 2012) we docked in Akaroa, New Zealand. Akaroa, long harbour in the Maori language, is the crater of a volcano which became extinct about 6m years ago. Akaroa is located on the eastern side of the south island (just south of Wellington). As there was a trip with a difference, which didn't start 'til 10:30 am, we decided to do that tour. To reach the town we had to go by tender and once in the town we boarded the ketch Fox II for a wildlife tour of the crater. The boat, which was built in 1920 and started life as a British cargo boat, was captained by Roy, the current owner. The crew were three young people who are involved in one of the many conservation schemes in NZ. We sailed ... read more

We woke up to bright sunshine and after yummy scrambled eggs a la Mrs C we made our way to the jetty and Black Cat Cruises, stopping for NZ coffee on the way. The catamaran took us out through the harbour along the inlet that Akaroa is situated in. Almost at once we saw Dolphins. These are Hector's Dolphins, really small and then we saw a mother and calf so cute. They played around the boat and liked to ride in the bow wave, we must have seen over 30 Dolphins swimming around the boat and up and down the inlet. Then we saw small blue Penguins just a couple swimming and then seals also swimming and some resting on the rocks. There were some baby Shags being fed by their mum and cormorants flying about. ... read more

Akaroa The morning started cloudy but soon cleared. We decided to go on a walk to the Heritage Park which was on top of the peninsula. It was a steep climb and we climbed and climbed and at each stage we saw more and more beautiful views. We took the walk slowly as it was very warm. The sound of the birds was wonderful and there were an amazing variety of flowers and plants. Some of it was just like a set from the hobbit the trees were huge. We eventually made it to the top where we found Heritage Park which was not what we expected, a bit disappointing. We then walked all the way back down the hill, through the holiday park and to the village. The height of the hill was 2500 ft, ... read more

1st of December is officially the first day of summer in New Zealand. Was awoken by a very loud siren going off, bit concerned as to what is was to start off but when I asked a local when I heard a similar s iren a couple of weeks ago she said it was to call in fire brigade volunteers. Late getting away from campsite this morning originally planned to find a walk but to be fair it took about 30 mins to get to the information centre in Akaroa so did not get around to doing another walk. Akaroa was settled by the French so all the road names are in French. I spent the afternon on a boat but I forgot to put sunscreen on so my face is a bit red now. Saw ... read more

Had a fanastic drive through Arthur's Pass yesterday from west coast to east coast of the South Island As usual the drive was not for the faint hearted, it included going over a bridge one vehicle wide with a railway line running down the middle, a rock shelter built over the road to prevent vehicles being hit by falling rocks, a waterfall diverted to avoid the road. The road was so steep at one point even with my foot to floor only just managed 35km/hr. Almost forgot road was so high up my ears popped whilst I was driving. I had planned to do a walk at Aurthur's Pass Village but was put off by the fact that local info centre hired out location beaons. Thought I would be out of depth, but asked if there ... read more
