After a healthy breakfast we set off on foot down Maunganui Road with three aims in mind … find a watchmaker to replace a pin on the band of my watch … find an atm to withdraw cash to exchange for $2 coins for the laundry … to see the sights. All three achieved, with the walk continuing from the footpaths to the long, wide Mt Maunganui Beach, Moturiki Island and The Mount Main Beach. Surfers, paddle boarders and hydrofoilers were in abundance and enjoying great wave rides. There were many English tourists in town and on the beach as they had been watching the NZ v Eng 1st cricket Test at Mt Maunganui … England won. We struck up conversation with a delightful English couple whilst on Moturiki Island. They have migrated to NZ and ... read more

A very leisurely get up and go this morning. Weather threatening, however, there was still much clear sky and the sun was warm. Our aim was to make it to Mt Maunganui and catch a few sites along the way. Waterfalls in every country one visits seem to take pride of place and NZ has numerous falls which attract people from around the world. It’s probably the combination of the greenery, usually forest, that surrounds the falls, the enclosed tracks leading to the falls, the gathering of momentum of the river as it cascades with a roar over the usually steep drop, the mist rising from the continual volume of water hitting the base, whatever it is, we still love them, and the Okere Falls were no different. The river feeding the Okere Falls also fed ... read more

Oldlowes afloat/adrift. ...what could possibly go wrong? Yes yes yes oldlowes are go! The water is low enough to allow canoes on the river and we have been thrown into panic! We’re packing barrels and drybags and trying to decide what to take and are very excited about getting out on the Whanganui at last. We’re limited to the three day trip as the top reaches of the river are still closed but we are very chuffed to be getting out at all. We left early to get out on the river for the final briefing from the people who are renting us the canoes, including how to use the emergency beacon to summon a helicopter (niiice). Pete paddled at the back (apparently the Captain (so he thinks haha)) me in front (Engine haha). After a ... read more

After a relaxing and enjoyable 2 day stay at Kinloch it was time to move on. We were ‘just-going-to-drive-and-see-what-tickled-our-fancy’. Before we departed a friend had sent us a photo of a place they had visited and enjoyed. We made note of it but were not going to seek it out. More of that to come. Our first fancy tickler was Aratiatia Rapids. We deviated off the beaten track and eventually found them … well, we found huge rocks, boulders, a gorge and rock pools. No rapids … until we heard a siren … the hydro electric dam up stream was letting water through. We headed to the viewing position above the gorge and waited and watched as the water rapidly cascaded down and over the boulders and rocks … rapids created. Onto highway 5 and Rotorua ... read more

Loved the place so much we decided to stay for another day. The marina is an investment area … 142 moorings (called allotments) only … there are NO fees … the boat owner OWNS the allotment … current price per allotment $500 000. Definitely a wealthy person’s area. A further 1 000 blocks are being developed in the countryside around Kinloch, however the number of moorings will remain at 142 … supply and demand … drives the price up. We’ve researched the Hicks Bay to Gisborne to Napier to Hastings road conditions … infrastructure damage … e.g. bridges swept away … property damage etc … absolute destruction in sections … Landslips, washaways, rivers broken banks … so will reassess our routes in 2-3 days’ time depending on road openings. Jane is reluctant, I am waiting on ... read more

First the cyclone, (still waiting for the water to go down)….and now an earthquake…what a country! Hoorah the cyclone has passed….with lots of high winds and power cuts and closed roads but we were safely snuggled in our dodgy motel without power feeling very sorry for those people who were having to deal with landslides and damaged structures. We ventured out to find lots of trees down but we met a man who had driven across from Raetihi which is where we were heading and he confirmed that the road was open so off we went. So many trees down ….whole forests where the trees had been sliced off by the wind about 3 metres off the ground. The main Highway 4 is closed by a landslip just south of where we are staying so we ... read more

Up well before the sun. Swans rush to greet me. Reminds me of Como foreshore. We leave early and find a quiet spot on the banks of Lake Taupo to have breakfast before heading to Taupo. Nice, however in our opinion, not ‘raveable’. An ordinary town situated on Lake Taupo. Busy. Huka Falls was the highlight. Flowing over a 9m fall in a narrow gorge at 200 000L/second, enough to fill 5 Olympic size swimming pools per minute. Cyclone Gabrielle had cut a swathe through the Taupo area. Hundreds of trees, many of them massive in height and girth, had been uprooted or split in half. Landslides and rockfalls were many. Numerous workmen were busy with chainsaws, cranes and other heavy lifting equipment as were opportunists gathering future firewood. I suggested we head to Kinloch about ... read more

We closed-up shop last night with the sky “on fire”. We reopened this morning to clear sky and the sun shining. The road conditions, opened or closed, for the route we planned to take, were checked. All good, even though there had been numerous rockfalls, landslides, washaways and fallen trees, all of which had been cleared from the main thoroughfare. We came across all of them with workmen still in attendance. Before leaving Hawera we explored it a little. A very clean, well ordered town with all the facilities one would need in this modern age. However, we both wanted to hit the road and experience The Forgotten World Highway. With Mt Taranaki/Mt Egmont clearly on our left we headed for Stratford and the beginning of Highway 43, more commonly known as The Forgotten World Highway. ... read more

I was awoken by Jane calling out, “I’m scared. I’m scared.” Soothing words of encouragement had her settled in no time! The van was being, and had been, buffeted by strong winds and the howl from the trees was indeed a little worrying. The trees were tall, flexible and bent and swayed in the wind without snapping or being uprooted. The water on the lake was being whipped into tornado like twisters as they sped across the lake at high speed. Very fortunate to be witnessing nature providing such entertainment. This continued the whole time we were camped. We departed Lake Rotomaru at approximately 8am hoping to reach Ohawe Beach campsite. We did and we rejected the site. The wind was far too ferocious with little protection. We headed to Hawera and a caravan park where ... read more

Auckland looks a lovely city through the rain showers which have been constant since we arrived. At least we arrived here before the cyclone. We have had high alert weather warning, set for 7pm tonight! Sadly all excursions were cancelled so no sailing for Roger. Yesterday we had a look around a few blocks near the wharf. Ship is docked very close to downtown. Today we tried to go to museum but closed due to weather so went to Sky City and up the Sky Tower. Some super views despite misty conditions. Hopefully Hop on hop off bus running tomorrow so can try museum again. It has natural history as well as discovery of island and war memorial. Bay if Islands cancelled too( apparently 12 m waves there yesterday!) We are due to stop in Tauranga ... read more
