March 6- I arrived at 6am after the 13 hour flight, feeling good. My muscle relaxant worked and the neck pillow was crucial to my 6 hours of sleep! I drove to downtown New Zealand. The airport is nice, and customs was suprisingly efficient, cordial, intuitive and easy. First was the passport stamper, the then drug sinffing beagle and friendly kiwi handlers, and then the agricultural inspections. I... Read Full Entry

The light was very low for pictures. For the eyes, it was a visual feast! As many fish in Puerto Rico, but lots more eels. There were also thousands of harmless "Comb Jellyfish" near the surface. Their propelling Cilia difract light, which makes them look like they have sparkling rainbow veins!

We started to head towards the Sea Arch...was it big enough for the double decker dive boat?

We easily cleared it, there were arches and caves everywhere. While Painted Cave in the Channel Islands of California is the world's lonest sea cave at 1227 feet long- Riko Riko Cave on the Poor Knight Islands is the largest Sea Cave by volume, double the volume of Painted Cave.

Tree Plantations are everywhere. In the Late 70's after dimishing returns, New Zealand adopted a strictly sustainable forest industry.

These forests are also designated scenic reserves, and for good reason! Natives work their way in, and tree ferns are left standing after harvest.

To Pinus radiata, the moist climate and clean air of New Zealand feel better than home sweet home back in California!

Pine plantations are also common in Chile, some are tens of miles wide. It tends to make these places feel familiar, almost like being home.

One only has to look at the moon to discover you aren't home in California- The moon is upside down!

My favourite dive spot
Great photos of my favourite dive spot! the Poor Knights is one of the best dive spots in the world and you have captured the character of the place so brilliantly. Pity the light was not better on the day as words cant describe the beauty that abounds here. Thanks Stephen for these magic photos.
