On a déjà observé ce genre ... read more

Gina did an awesome job organising for the whole family to be together for a beach holiday in Whangamata and for Christmas in Hunua. And we finally got to meet our gorgeous new nephews, Ezra and Ashton! It had been in the planning since early 2011 and on 16 December we flew out to NZ and said "surpriiise" as we arrived at Whangamata that afternoon. Our lovely house was literally 20 seconds from the beach. We enjoyed lovely walks, the surf, yummy meals and catching up with everyone.... read more

29 04 2010 Kia Ora. After a good night of ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZs we woke up with a keen determination to enjoy the last few days we have left in New Zealand. Feeling slightly homesick after speaking to Annie last night and realising I am missing the girly chats and a mean game of Mah Jong. Oh of course not forgetting the kids! We left Rotorua today heading north to the East Coast to find more sun and long magical golden beaches every one raved about. It did not take us long before hunger pangs set in so we set up beside Lake Rotorua the other side of the lake to where we had stayed. Breakfast was called for and before long the smell bacon etc was wafting over the camper van. It was real hardship with a ... read more

21st - 22nd December 2008 Whangamata The beach at Whangamata looked lovely as we drove in, but it was a bit cold and we didn't fancy shivering in the surf - it's okay for those who have wetsuits (pansies!). We decided to camp on the DOC site which was a few kms out of town, set in beautiful forest and hills with a river running through. We went for a walk up to a very tall waterfall and climbed to the top of it.. As usual, I'm crap with heights and couldn't look over the edge. Rob, of course, has no fear. He got me to paddle at the top, which is good for me, and then we walked back down, following the river. Near the end of the walk we found a great swimming hole ... read more

There is not much I can say about today - as we had a lie in we made the most of it and when we finally got up we took a stroll into the town and picke up croissants and oj for brekkie and visited the butcher and grocer for our tea that evening. After going back to the room we had breakfast on the terrace and then made our way to the beach to catch some cloud rays!!!! It was very warm and the sun was desperately trying to peek through so we thought that we would make the most of our day off. After walking down the beach we came to a great little bit of sand and set up camp. Across from the beach there were two islands that you can walk to ... read more

After the rain of yesterday we woke up a little despondant as it was still chucking it down!!!! Eau de egg was still hanging in the air but we had had a good nights sleep and were not going to let the weather get us down!!! We has decided that we were going to go to Te Pui first which is in Rotarua and is all about Mauri Culture. As we pulled up it seemed very touristy and the rain was really lashing down - we made it to the gate but we didn't go in and turned back to the warmth and dry of the car - we decided that today was not the day to be walking round in the yukky weather taking in culture!!! We drove to the next stop which was called ... read more

Leaving the rafting place, we pushed on northwards in the pouring rain lunching at Maketu, then on through Tauranga where we failed to replace our punctured tyre because it was now Saturday afternoon and everything was closed. Overnight found us 10k’s inland up in the hills near the Tuahu walkway and back out again to the main road the next morning, onto Kati Kati and then Waihi - home of the Martha Mine, one the world’s largest open pit goldmines. We wandered around the historic Cornish pumphouse, recently moved to avoid it falling into the open cast mine and learnt that we couldn’t tour the mine until the next day (Monday), but that there was an interesting area just a short drive away that could entertain us until then. And so we drove to Karangahake Gorge ... read more

Bach on the beachAnna Caswellurl='/Videos/2593.html' onclick='dialog("/Videos/2593.html?popped=1","tbvideo",600,600);return false;'Crazy Although summer is officially over here, the weather is still pretty mild, so the idea of a weekend retreat to the beach (never achieved during summer) was met with a great deal of enthusiasm. The excuse? Pip's leaving get together, before she flies off to Bejing for the year. The group? Well of the 10 of us there were many familiar faces from the Whanganui trip. We were also graced with some additional people - Karena, a doctor from the UK (great conversations on the calving vs childbirth, lube pumps vs forceps etc), Aaron, a pilot for Air New Zealand (sounds flash, but so far it's only the little 12 seaters), the celebrity Erica Wood (famous for her news reports in Rotorua, and... read more
