The flight to Wellington was a goodun. I hadn't expected much but as soon as I sat down, next to my pre-booked window seat (gotta have a window seat), I was greeted by a beautiful young girl from Auckland who was sat next to me. Sharon was from Auckland but studied psychology at Wellington University. We got chatting and on the shuttle bus to the city, I got her number and arranged to give her a call to meet up sometime before I flew to Oz. I'd booked myself into Trek Global which was a smaller close knit community hostel in the city I'd visited before as some girls I knew through Mark were staying there. This hostel it turns out was notorious for having problems with their fire alarms. Literally every other day the fire alarm would go off. It was due to people cooking and the positions of the fire sensors next to the kitchens. During my 4 day stay there it went off 3 times, once for so long that the fire brigade sent 3 fire engines out. And it still goes off. Sharon was busy studying and doing exams for a few days so I spent the
next 3 days chilling in the lovely sun trying to get a tan on my white pasty body. I called in to the pool bar where I'd spoken to the guy about a DJ set and was given the bad news that unless I wanted to DJ with CD's then I couldn't play as their vinyl equipment was being used that weekend elsewhere. I could've done it but I just wasn't confident enough with CDJ's to play a live set on air.
I had been listening to a lot of music through my earphones in the last few days and I couldn't take much more of not having a computer to make music, which I did a bit of at home, so I started doing a bit of shopping around for a laptop. Finding something small, light and easily portable with enough power to run music production software without breaking the bank proved to be tricky. After 2 days of searching I found my ideal laptop. An Acer Aspire ultra book. Ultra slim, ultra cool and fast enough for my needs. Sweet. I took it back to the hostel and immediately installed loads of software on it and began
to produce a chilled dubstep tune. The next thing I knew I received a text off Sharon after waiting for days. She wanted to meet me for some food. I was beginning to think she wasn't interested, she'd just been really busy. So I brushed up and met her at a nice little cafe for some food and we sat and chatted for a few hours before she went shopping for more food to make a meal for her friend that night whose birthday it was. I'd arranged to meet up with her and her friends that night at a bar but they didn't make it out as the birthday girl had drank too much and was busy being ill. Most girls simply can't handle their drinks. So I ended up chilling in my hostel working on this tune.
There were a few other people in the hostel at this time and a few German girls started to wonder what I was doing and began chatting to me. Next thing you know and I'm transferring loads of music off my hard drive onto theirs as we all shared a similar taste in music. They had planned to go out
that night to a bar called Sandwiches which I'd been to when I was in Wellington before. Awesome, that's one of the only bars I found in Wellington which plays good dance music. Obviously I agreed to join them and ended up getting rather friendly with one of the girls, Johanna, knowing that I wouldn't be meeting Sharon again. Shame that the next day I was flying to Christchurch to spend one night there before my flight to Sydney.
The hostel I'd booked in Christchurch had terrible reviews but because it was cheap and close to the airport I didn't care. Well, to call it a hostel was a bit misleading. I've had more sociable experiences whilst taking a shit. I was the only guest. The room stank like old peoples home and the furniture matched with the 1980's 14" TV in the corner. But they had free Wi-Fi. So I was in the middle of nowhere, on my own with nothing to do but internet shit. Perfect opportunity to catch up with some terribly missed friends and family back at home.
I had to check out in the morning at 10am and had nothing to do in-between then and my flight to Sydney which was at about 5 in the afternoon. The airport was about an hour and a half walk away and it was a nice day, so in a bid to keep fit and to kill a bit of time I decided to walk there. It's a good job I was travelling light with only a 35L backpack and a 10L carry-on bag. And on to Sydney.
