"Kia Ora" - Hello in Mauri!! Its been a few days since we started our trip so thought it was time to give you all an update while we can! So by time flight arrived into Auckland on first day we didn't get to hostel until 1.30 am! We were straight up the next morning to do a drive 2.5 hours to Waitomo to see the Waitomo Caves and Glow worms. We thought we were going into the water in a boat, turns out we got wet suits and straight into a tube that keeps us afloat! In a dark cave with little light and a strong tide it was intimidating but so good to see the glow worms in the ceiling! Derek did jumping down a waterfall backwards but I chickened out... ~When life gives you lemons, make lemon chocolate cheese cake.~ I saw this new rendition of an old cliché on a restaurant's sign and it brought about a good laugh, especially from my inner fat child. But lately I've been mulling it over, thinking about what those sayings mean and something has broken off inside and is rattling around my brain. To say life has given me lemons is an understatement; it gave me diamonds and I'm just blind to their worth. I'm living in a foreign country and meeting new people, pushing myself out of my comfort zone in order to grow spiritually which is more than a lot of people can lay claim to, but all I do is whine about emotional turmoil. I admit this trip, this adventure isn't what I expected it ... read more

Most of the geothermal and volcanic phenomena we have seen this far in New Zealand we had seen more and bigger on Iceland and in Yellowstone earlier on the trip, but our next destination was however something completely new to us, an active volcano island! White island outside of Whakatane got its name from the white steam clouds surrounding it when the first westerners saw them. It is still steaming, it is however mostly safe enough to visit nowadays. Already half an hour before we arrived to the island we saw the steam plumes rising. The area around the steaming crater lake was filled with fumaroles and yellow sulfur crystals, and the air burned in your throat if you breathed it without the gas mask that was given out before boarding the island. The crater lake ... read more

Auckland Take 2 We headed back to Auckland from Lake Taupo (not your average route for travellers ultimately heading south) to watch the Vodafone Warriors face off against the Sydney Roosters at Eden Park. We stopped off for the day in Mt. Eden, a quaint little suburb town of Auckland, with several nice coffee shops, bars, some unique shops and a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Rach was somewhat disenchanted with the Mount of Mount Eden, and thought it should be demoted to hill Eden...doesn't quite have the same ring to it! Seeing as NZ is famous for their "fush and chups," a sign advertising Auckland's best caught our attention...after testing it at both lunch and dinner, Tom was inclined to agree. Eden park was absolutely buzzing as kick off neared with a crowd of 32,000. With ... read more

The highlight of this trip of course is catching up with family, and friends that we consider family. We had another 1st birthday party for Samuel - Roberts styley, which was great fun. Ashlee couldn't make it unfortunately because of her rowing commitments but otherwise it was a full house. We celebrated Matt's birthday with him in Aubergine Restaurant, Thorndon. There are some friends in life where it doesn't matter how long it is since you saw each other, you just pick up where you left off. It's exactly like that with Matt and Milly, everytime. It's also like that with me ol' mucker, Comedy Mads, and I can't tell you how pleased I was to see her again, and to meet her six month old baby Thomas. He is gorgeous, and if anyone deserves a ... read more

Here a few of the things that have changed in Wellington since we were last here two years ago. It's not much really, and it still feels very familiar and homely.... read more

Our first day in Wellington was pretty chilled. We had a wander into Eastbourne and let the kids run round the playground for an hour or so. Mike, Hayley, Andy, Shona and the girls came round for dinner and it was great to introduce the little man, and see everyone again. I know we all hated hearing it when we were teenagers, but I can't get over how much Ashlee and Logan have grown. Makes me kind of sad that we miss out on so much of their growing up... Day 2 was like no other. I think the bus finallly hit me, and I could not stop sleeping. Day 3 was much the same... We managed to catch up with Joshua and Flynn, now 8 and 10. Very gorgeous boys I must say. Day 4 ... read more

I felt like we had to earn our bed in Wellington tonight. After waking at the crack of dawn (again), Amelia went off happily with Lyra and Julie to a dance class they do every Monday. This gave us (me, Alex and Samuel) an opportunity to do lots of sight-seeing, walking and generally squeezing as much in as possible before lunch time. So we did exactly that, and the photos below probably describe better what we did, than my boring ramblings. What they don't show is how bludy knackered I was!!! We got back at lunch time and got a taxi to the airport. Samuel hadn't been sick for about 30 hours so we were feeling optimistic that that little chapter was over. A short hop over the ditch, and we would be in the comfort ... read more

Saturday November 12, 2011 - Day 17 Our plan for the day was to drive to the town of Nelson for the day to see the sights and seek out a couple of breweries and the hop fields. As we left Blenheim Lisa calmly reminded Jim that we are supposed to drive on the left. After he exited the right hand lane and returned to the left hand lane, he gave Lisa the official job of reminding him of this information throughout the rest of the trip. The road was fairly straight and we passed about another 1,000 sheep in multiple pastures. Along the way we passed through a few small towns and remembered that one of the locals told us there are no stop lights in Blenheim and through the country side all we came ... read more
