Forgotten World Highway
This morning we set off soon after 9am heading for the Forgotten World Highway on route to Waitomo. It was a little grey & drizzely but still lovely to drive the twisting road through hilly farmland & a native forest gorge. This included a trip through the Republic of Whangamomona - a town that declared itself independant, as far as I can tell to prevent them having to play for a rival rigby team! Their presdidents have included Billy Gumboot the Goat and Tai the Poodle!

We arrived at Waitomo in time to book in with The Legendary Black Water Rafting Company for the Black Labyrinth rafting trip at 3pm. We wet-suited up, chose our inflated inner tyres & headed into the caves. We jumped off a couple of small waterfalls (backwards holding the tyre to your bum!), turned off our torches & floated in a convoy down under a ceiling full of glowworms! This was the best bit as you just held on to the feet of the person behind you & let the guide in front pull you gently along. We also turned our lights off & were told to follow the glowworms along a tunnel to get

to the cave exit - this was rather fun & felt much more daring than it actually was!

We then heded up to a hostel in the hills above Te Kuiti - a beautiful quiet place with a very friendly cat (as there was at the last hostel actually). We checked in then headed into town to find food at a local restaurant rather than buy something to cook here. Julian had lamb & myself & the waitress/owner(?) discussed the joys of getting bone marrow out with the back of teaspoon & introduced Julian to this delicacy! Unfortunately we were too full to try the yummy looking Ginger Pudding but we did get back to the hostel in time to enjoy the sunset from our private decking! Julian has been taking time lapsed photos of the sunset & playing with the cat & I have one foot in a bucket of hot salty water! Foot seems ok but best be safer after it got soaked with the black water rafting.
