Ohakune - Tongariro National Park
WELL I have to say last weekend when I checked out the snow at Mount Ruapehu was an experience. One which I may not dwell on here. It was a bit crazy and I shall gloss over the most part BUT
Ishbel - a girl from work and I headed off at lunchtime Friday for the 5 hour drive South past lake Taupo to the Tongariro National Park area to ski Turoa and Whakapapa (pronounced something that sounds rude so I won't elaborate).
Both these ski fields are on Mount Ruapehu which is an active volcano which quite often erupts lava over whoever is in its way which doesn't seem to put skiers and boarders off - it was mayhem busy!!
We stayed in Ohakune which is famous for its over sized veg. Namely a giant carrot.
We stayed at the very lovely Powderhorn Chalet and were very handy for the Mardi Gras Street party and the after party was even in the Matterhorn which was part of our digs. V nice.
Skiing on the Saturday
was good once I remembered how to do it and the views were lurvely!! We were lucky with the weather really as Sunday poured all day. NZ boarders are worse than any I have ever come across (although I defied them and didn't fall) so I was much in need of a few drinks after that experience!!
We donned our costume masks for the mardi gras but ended up ditching them and getting our faces painted which was fun! Peoples fancy dress outfits were fab - my favourite was the 'Swine Crew'...tee hee!!
Midnight Youth (are they even in the UK?) were headlining and they were great. Then off to the matterhorn. Lots if dancing and not much sleep later it was time to go home!!
Hope to ski again in the area soon!!! BUT first of all its off to Sunny Scotland!!! Can't wait to see some of you very soon! So its been a year......its passed so quickly!! But there'll be a few more blogs to come yet though...............
