On to Mordor

Whitianga to Mt Manganui to Taupo Poor weather diverted our surfing plans in Mt Manganui so instead, we'll take a 8 hr hike!

Moving on from Whitianga...

We stayed one night in Mount Manganui, which is a picturesque beach town and also a party town once the holidays roll around. It was a very young and hip surfy town, so we fit right in 😉 It also has a great little peak, Mount Manganui, just at the end of their main street. It almost seems out of place, standing guard over all the surf shops and dairies (corner stores) and apprently has a great view. (We weren't up for the challenge)

We've moved on now to Taupo, the skydiving capital of the world! For us, however, it will act as basecamp for our day hike of the Tongariro Crossing. It's a substantial town with a downtown comprised of more than one street (a big deal for us, down here).

We've planned the tramp for tomorrow. Weather reports forecast some showers and gusts, but it's the best option we have for the next couple days. Our shuttle picks us up at 5:45 AM! Ouch! Wish us the same luck Frodo had...

Next entry... Mordor!
