So Rotorua is known to the locals a Rotovagas as it's pretty much a play ground amongst the sulphur and mud pools in this thermal environment. The weather was still a bit hit and miss so in between the torrential rain we popped out and had a look at some of the active spots in the local park, soaked our feet in some sulphur pools and managed to hold our breath long enough to stand the eggy fart smell for some pictures!
Jo's friends from home Adam and Hannah were waiting to sky dive in Taupo but wanted to join up with us the next day, so we camped out another night.
Unfortunately their skydive didn't go ahead due to the weather, so we met up the next day at the sky park for some luge, sky swing and gondola fun! The sky swing catapults you off a ledge into the Rotorua landscape. I loved it- Jo however I think was glad when it was all over. Due to the rain we had to take a pit stop and had a catch up over a glass of wine before hitting the luges! The first few goes we're well underway with lots
of laughs and competitiveness! Due to Jo having a near miss we decided to head down the scenic route ( the one for babies) again our competitive streak took hold and this time it was me who ended up worse off! I crashed and managed to take my whole fingernail off of my left little finger half way down the track. Not to worry I'll head for the first aid station at the bottom- I can get sorted there right? Nope! This young lad turned a pale shade of grey and waved a plaster at me! Knowing this wouldn't be enough I had to get to the top to get to the first aid room there! So holding my hand above my head wrapped in a baby wipe I got on the slowest gondola to the top ever!!! Once at the top I showed another young lad and said I think I just need to pull the nail off. His response was golden- omg I'm not touching that!! And once again waved a plaster at me- I would just like to mention that at this point it is pouring with blood and I seem to be the only calm and
collected person about trying to deal with this! Long story short I hopped over to the hospital and had it removed by a doctor and got two stitches in it for good measure. Jo was a hero looking after me all the way- even if she was secretly filming me high as a kite on gas and air!
Next few days we took it slow cruising through Taupo and then onto Napier for some casual wine tasting along the way. Slowly but surely we headed down to Wellington- stopping at every McDonald's along the way for free wifi!!!
I had some bad news one day and Jo decided to treat me to watching beauty and the beast at the cinema- which was fab. We also caved and traded in the car for a night in a motel/cabin type thing just outside of Palmerston North- we definitely weren't in Kansas anymore Dorothy! This place was something out of redneck country, completed by a secret door to a hot tub in the room we weren't allowed to use!
We arrived in Wellington to more bad weather but made the most of it by visiting the national museum and checked out the Gallipoli
exhibit on Ferns recommendation and I have to say it was really fab!
We're off on the ferry in the morning to say goodbye North Island and hello South Island
Heading south for the winter Lauren and Jo
