Saturday January 2 - Today we had rain again. We drove south to make our way towards Auckland. At Kohukohu we had to take a short ferry ride to Rawene. We stopped in Opononi at an info site to book a campsite for the night and then drove to the Waipoua Kauri forest, where some of the oldest (1200-2000 years old) and largest remaining Kauri trees live. We walked around there and were amazed by the trees - if only the pictures could do them justice. We stopped at Dargaville, the largest producer of kumara (sweet potatoes) in New Zealand. We had fish and chips at a shop there, where the chips were special for being sweet potato chips (fries) with sour cream. Yum and yum. Después de llegar a la punta empezamos a bajar sin rumbo pasamos por las ninety mile beach y seguimos viaje por la zona oeste. Llegamos a un pueblo fantasma que no tenia salida y no dijeron que nos habiamos pasado 20km, y descubrimos que para seguir viaje habia que subir si o si a un ferry, así que esperamos ahí y llegamos al camping de Opononi muy tarde y con lluvia. ... read more

On 14 March we went up to the Hokianga, a beautiful region about 4 hours north of Auckland, to attend Katy and Brett's wedding. We had a wonderful weekend - it was a beautiful wedding set right in the heart of this beautiful and unspoilt region of NZ. The wedding venue was on the waterfront of the Hokianga Harbour and the sun came out just in time for the big event. And best of all, most of our extended family were able to be there to celebrate with the happy couple!
