We fully prepared and set off fairly late, 7.30am, for the climb of Mt Maunganui. Naturally, we took the steep path … which included hundreds of steep steps … not planned … just misinterpreted the signs. I arrived at the summit sweating like a pig and pretty pleased with myself. The views were forever changing as we climbed. It was one of the best ascents and descents of mountains that we have done. Scenery was always sensational. Numerous locals go to thetop and return each morning … a good percentage running … young and old … great place for triathlete training. Sheep graze on the lower slopes. Jane went for a swim while I dumped the waste products and refilled the water tank. Shopping for essentials was next on the list … even on holidays. Back ... read more

After a healthy breakfast we set off on foot down Maunganui Road with three aims in mind … find a watchmaker to replace a pin on the band of my watch … find an atm to withdraw cash to exchange for $2 coins for the laundry … to see the sights. All three achieved, with the walk continuing from the footpaths to the long, wide Mt Maunganui Beach, Moturiki Island and The Mount Main Beach. Surfers, paddle boarders and hydrofoilers were in abundance and enjoying great wave rides. There were many English tourists in town and on the beach as they had been watching the NZ v Eng 1st cricket Test at Mt Maunganui … England won. We struck up conversation with a delightful English couple whilst on Moturiki Island. They have migrated to NZ and ... read more

A very leisurely get up and go this morning. Weather threatening, however, there was still much clear sky and the sun was warm. Our aim was to make it to Mt Maunganui and catch a few sites along the way. Waterfalls in every country one visits seem to take pride of place and NZ has numerous falls which attract people from around the world. It’s probably the combination of the greenery, usually forest, that surrounds the falls, the enclosed tracks leading to the falls, the gathering of momentum of the river as it cascades with a roar over the usually steep drop, the mist rising from the continual volume of water hitting the base, whatever it is, we still love them, and the Okere Falls were no different. The river feeding the Okere Falls also fed ... read more

" Travel makes one modest. You can see what a tiny place you occupy in the World." Gustave Flaubert So it was with slightly heavy hearts that we left Otamure Bay and the Bay of Islands region. With Sue clutching onto the map and often turning it a full 360 deg to get orientation, we set off for the Bay of Plenty located on the east coast. This journey retraced our steps and after a brief coffee stop (these are essential) at Whangarei, the HBS nosed it's way south towards Auckland. New Zealand is seriously well geared up for travel with excellent signage to indicate places of interest and the small villages one passes through are neat and exceptionally clean. Roads are very good and motorists stick to the speed limits with a maximum of 100kph ... read more

Jolie petite ascension et trésor trouvé ... read more

Friday 20th December Now the first I'd ever heard of Black Friday was when it was on the news last month informing us that it was the discount shopping day after thanks giving and before Christmas. I was then to learn that in Wales-this is something entirely different in that it is the last Friday before Christmas when everyone goes out drinking-either way no matter which interpretation you choose-its probably wise to avoid Cardiff on either of these days! In New Zealand, I'm going to call it Red Friday, as that is what Daryls back now resembles after I missed a patch on his back whilst rubbing in the sun cream and now apparently it's all my fault he's scarred for life (his words not mine). Today we were heading for the beach. Mount Maunganui to ... read more

Nouvelle Zelande!!!
